King Charles Links to the Legendary Vlad the Impaler
King Charles is known for his fascination with royal history, and it seems he recently shared a remarkable personal connection with one of history’s most infamous figures, Vlad the Impaler, the real-life inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
In a memoir titled Boy from the Valleys: My Unexpected Journey, actor Luke Evans recalls an unforgettable encounter. The 46-year-old Welsh star met the then-Prince Charles at a Prince’s Trust gala dinner held at The Savoy Hotel in London back in 2014.
During their meeting, Evans learned of a surprising familial link between the British monarch and the notorious Romanian ruler.
Evans vividly remembers the moment as he describes how the now 76-year-old monarch greeted him with a firm handshake and inquired about his recent projects. At that time, Evans had just concluded filming Dracula Untold, where he portrayed Vlad Tepes III, better known as Vlad the Impaler. This historical figure is infamous for his brutal reign in the 15th century, which has fascinated audiences for centuries.
Upon mentioning his role, Evans noticed a spark in the king’s eyes. As reported in various outlets, Charles responded with excitement, stating, “I’ll tell you an interesting story. I’m actually related to Vlad Tepes.” This revelation intrigued Evans, who listened intently as the king detailed his lineage back to the 1400s.
During their conversation, Charles mentioned he owns several properties in Romania, where Vlad once ruled. “It is the most incredible story,” Evans recalled saying, to which the king notably replied, “Yes, and not a lot of people know it.” After this engaging exchange, Charles gave a warm smile before moving on to greet other guests.
Evans observed that the king spent more time with him than with others, likely due to their shared interest in a captivating historical narrative that linked their lives.
The Prince’s Trust, now referred to as the King’s Trust, was inaugurated by Charles in 1976. This charity aims to empower disadvantaged youth across the United Kingdom. Evans, as an ambassador for the trust, has been part of its commendable efforts to provide hope and opportunity for young individuals.
Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner highlighted King Charles’ long-standing affection for Romania. He states that researchers first discovered the connecting bloodline when looking into Prince George’s ancestry following his birth in 2013. Turner emphasized that Charles continues to visit his holiday home in Romania annually.
In a lighthearted manner, Turner remarked that those who might challenge the king’s decisions ought to reconsider, given the formidable heritage he embodies.
Hilary Fordwich, a British royal expert, also chimed in on the topic. She revealed that Charles enjoys sharing this fun fact about his ancestry. Interestingly, Romanian officials have playfully referred to him as the ‘Prince of Transylvania,’ acknowledging his fondness for the region.
In 2023, during a reception at Cotroceni Palace, King Charles openly expressed his love for Romania, marking a significant milestone as it was his first trip abroad since his coronation. This visit reaffirmed his close ties and affectionate connection to the nation.
Romania has become a sanctuary for King Charles, a place where he can escape the public eye. His possessions in the country include at least ten properties, strategically selected for their tranquility and beauty. During these retreats, he prioritizes disconnection, enjoying the rustic charm of his countryside home that lacks modern amenities like Wi-Fi or television.
Echoing the ties between the British monarch and Romanian history, in 2017, the mayor of Alba Iulia requested King Charles to accept an honorary title of Prince of Transylvania. It remains a point of curiosity whether this offer still holds as a gesture of goodwill from a nation enchanted by its connection to royalty.
This fascinating glimpse into King Charles’ heritage not only cements his personal ties to a notorious historical figure but also enriches the narrative of royal family connections across Europe.
The intersection of royal history, personal heritage, and cultural ties showcases the enduring legacy of Vlad the Impaler through the lens of modern monarchy, leaving onlookers intrigued by the undeniable stories that continue to unfold.
