Songer’s stance sharply opposes Washington’s sanctuary laws, which restrict law enforcement from aiding federal authorities in immigration matters. This puts him in direct conflict with state officials, including Democratic Governor Bob Ferguson. Ferguson aims to safeguard the rights of “law-abiding Washington families,” which he argues include many undocumented immigrants who contribute positively to the community.

Despite the prevailing political climate, Sheriff Songer, who has dedicated over 56 years to law enforcement and is currently in his third term, remains unyielding. He stated, “I will cooperate with ICE 100 percent because they’re doing the right thing.” This firm position indicates a commitment to immigration enforcement that many in his region may support.

In a discussion with Fox News Digital, Songer elaborated on the realities of his rural county, noting that illegal immigrants frequently traverse the area. He expressed concern that many receive taxpayer-funded benefits, which often fuels community discontent.

“When people have invaded our country across the southern border and even the northern border from Canada, it is the government’s duty to protect American citizens by preventing that invasion,” Songer emphasized. He questioned the rationale behind local leaders, including governors, mayors, and police chiefs, who choose to shield serious criminals from immigration enforcement.

He continued, “Why am I standing up against that? You bet I’m saying that Tom Homan, if you wish to contact me, I’ll give you my phone number; he can have me on speed dial.” This readiness to engage signifies a willingness to foster collaboration with federal authorities.

When confronted with critiques, especially from Democrats and media outlets suggesting that not all undocumented immigrants should face arrest and deportation, Songer remained firm. He refuted their claims, stating, “They’ll try to tell you, ‘well, those who just waded across the Rio Grande, that’s a civil infraction,’ that’s bull; it’s a crime under federal law. Period. No matter what their intentions were.”

As he concluded, “I know Washington State is a blue, blue, blue sanctuary state. It’s scary to live in this kind of atmosphere.” Yet, he made it clear that as long as he holds office, he will stand firm in his cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He expressed readiness to assist those in need, saying, “All they got to do is reach out and ask for assistance in Klickitat County, and I’ll be there, standing at attention and willing to carry out the duties.”
