Ramon Brockington, a local who was filming body surfers during the incident, described the scene: “Basically, the boat was surfing like a giant surfboard. I’ve never seen a boat of that size and caliber being picked up like a toy and launched across the beach.” His firsthand account highlights the unusual nature of the event, which has intrigued both locals and tourists.

Response from Authorities

In response to the grounding, watchstanders at the Coast Guard directed the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Station Honolulu. However, due to the shallow water conditions and the state of the sea, the crew was unable to reach the stranded vessel. Fortunately, Honolulu Ocean Safety Department’s jet ski crews arrived swiftly and confirmed that the two individuals aboard were unharmed.

Later in the day, around 6:25 p.m., Cates Marine Services and the tugboat Miki’oi arrived to assist. They attempted to secure lines to the Discovery in order to facilitate towing efforts. Unfortunately, complications arose when the cleats used to secure the boat failed, prompting the temporary halt of these operations.
