Early Inspiration and Inquisitive Nature

From a young age, Sanger exhibited a penchant for deep philosophical inquiries, often challenging his parents and authority figures with complex theological questions. He recalls asking, “What is the difference between the mind, the spirit and the soul?” His relentless pursuit of answers sometimes frustrated adults around him.

A certain pastor’s dismissal of his probing thoughts left a lasting impact, reinforcing his skepticism. As a result, Sanger eventually adopted a worldview where he believed a person’s beliefs materially influenced their actions.

He vowed to adopt only those beliefs he could substantiate, striving to avoid the pitfalls he observed in others. Reflecting on this period, he shared, “I essentially razed all of my beliefs to the ground.” His faith in God was among the first casualties.

Solidifying Doubts in Graduate School

Years later, Sanger’s agnosticism became solidified during his time in graduate school. However, transformative life events prompted him to reassess his beliefs. The birth of his first child and subsequent marriage generated profound realizations. He stated, “I realized that I would be willing to die for these people… If I was willing to die for my wife and child, then I would be acting in their interest, not my interest.” This epiphany scrutinized his beliefs in rational self-interest.

As he navigated through marriage and parenthood, Sanger’s once-firm beliefs began to waver. He actively engaged with theological arguments and observed a growing hostility towards Christianity from some atheists. This increasing tension drew him further into contemplation about faith.

He expressed, “I discovered, to my shock and consternation, that it actually makes a lot more sense than I understood.” His inquiries about faith were not unique; they had been addressed by many others throughout history.
