Transgender actress Laverne Cox strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders during her appearance on Friday’s episode of ‘The View’. Cox described these orders as “illegal,” stating her opinions unequivocally as she discussed the implications of the directives alongside comedian George Wallace, who joined her to promote their new series, ‘Clean Slate’.
The executive orders signed by Trump last month aim to reinforce a binary understanding of gender within federal policies. Titled, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” the first order clarifies U.S. policy recognizing only two biological sexes: male and female. This action has raised serious concerns among advocates for transgender rights, who argue that it undermines the dignity and rights of transgender individuals.
In addition, Trump also issued the ‘No Men in Women’s Sports’ executive order. This mandates that public institutions determine eligibility for women’s sports based on biological sex rather than gender identity or hormone levels. Such measures sparked debate, especially in the context of equality in sports.
As the conversation shifted to the intersection of acting and activism, co-host Ana Navarro expressed admiration for Cox’s commitment to both fields. Cox, who has experienced discrimination and prejudice as a transgender individual, shared her concerns about the current political climate. She emphasized the long history of anti-trans legislation at the state level, which has intensified in recent years.
“It started at the state level many years ago,” Cox explained. “Over 26 states have enacted laws that ban ‘gender-affirming care’ for young people. This has caused immense distress, pushing many trans families to relocate and fostering a climate of fear among parents.”
Cox expressed hope that Trump’s executive orders would be legally challenged due to their perceived illegality. “I truly believe that these actions are harmful and unfounded,” she added. “They affect the lives of countless transgender individuals across the nation.”
During her discussion, Cox highlighted the socio-economic issues often misattributed to the transgender community. “At the end of the day, trans people constitute less than 1% of the population. We are not responsible for economic hardship, soaring healthcare costs, or rising rental prices,” she asserted. “The focus should be on the real contributors to these issues, not marginalized communities.”
Throughout her appearance, Cox invoked a message of love and solidarity with transgender individuals, affirming her commitment to their cause.
