FIRST ON FOX: In the face of potential government shutdowns, a Texas lawmaker is advocating for the protection of salaries for Border Patrol agents. This initiative comes as Congress approaches critical funding deadlines.
Representative Monica De La Cruz, a Republican from Texas, has reintroduced the Pay Our Border Patrol and Customs Agents Act. This legislation aims to ensure that employees of Customs and Border Protection receive their salaries even if the government shuts down during fiscal year 2025.
The proposed bill specifically focuses on covering the wages and operational expenses of Border Patrol agents along with the Office of Field Operations. The latter is crucial for staffing ports of entry.
De La Cruz stated, “Border Patrol agents go above and beyond to ensure our communities are protected and our border is secure.” This statement underscores her commitment to supporting those who uphold national security.
She continued, “Under the leadership of President Trump, Border Patrol agents have been able to effectively execute their duties, leading to historically low illegal crossing numbers. We cannot let political maneuvering jeopardize their well-earned paychecks.” The bill currently enjoys support from 16 co-sponsors including lawmakers from border states.
The reintroduction of this bill arises amid rising concerns over a possible government shutdown. Lawmakers have postponed funding discussions for fiscal year 2025 twice since October, persisting through established continuing resolutions.
Without prompt legislative action, Congress risks entering a partial government shutdown by March 14. To avoid this scenario, GOP leaders are discussing the passage of another continuing resolution, potentially extending federal funding through the end of fiscal year 2025.
Despite these efforts, lawmakers face challenges regarding Democratic leaders’ demands for the resolution. These include assurances that President Trump will respect congressional appropriations and constrain spending to approved limits.
De La Cruz’s bill would function as a safeguard for Border Patrol agents, ensuring they continue to receive their paychecks even in the event of a funding lapse.
