Hank Brennan, the special prosecutor involved in the Karen Read case, publicly denounced the actions of supporters of the accused on Monday, asserting that their behavior undermines the foundational principles of the American legal system.
In a statement, Brennan remarked, “The campaign of intimidation and abuse that has been waged, funded, and promoted in public and on social media is the antithesis of justice. If this type of conduct becomes commonplace, it will threaten the integrity of our judicial system, affecting both victims and those accused of crimes.”
Brennan further emphasized, “We cannot condone witness abuse that leaves participants worried for their own safety or that of their families.”
Among the most vocal proponents of Read is Aidan Kearney, a blogger from Canton known as Turtleboy. He currently faces charges for witness intimidation related to this case.
Brennan expressed a hope that the recent verdict would allow witnesses and their families to lead normal lives. He stated, “The harassment of these innocent victims and family members is deplorable and should never happen again in this commonwealth.”
Last week, a jury acquitted Karen Read of all homicide-related charges in her second trial concerning the death of John O’Keefe, a Boston police officer and her former boyfriend. Prosecutors had alleged that Read fatally struck O’Keefe with her 2021 Lexus LX 570 SUV and left him at the scene during a blizzard on January 29, 2022.
Despite these allegations, Read’s defense firmly denied any collision took place. Jurors ultimately agreed and found her guilty only of drunken driving.
Although the jury has reached a verdict, reports indicate that Read’s supporters remain fixated on the case’s witnesses. One witness is due to marry over the weekend, and following a social media post from a “Free Karen Read” account that shared details about the wedding, the registry website suddenly went offline.
Brennan expressed his disappointment about the outcome, stating, “I am disappointed in the verdict and the fact that we could not achieve justice for John O’Keefe and his family.”
Having joined the case last year, Brennan worked alongside the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office after the first trial resulted in a deadlocked jury. He noted that District Attorney Michael Morrissey granted him full discretion to reassess the evidence presented. Brennan sought to pursue the same charges, including second-degree murder.
Brennan explained, “After an independent and thorough review of all the evidence, I concluded that the evidence led to one person, and only one person. Neither the closed federal investigation nor my independent review led me to identify any other possible suspect or person responsible for the death of John O’Keefe.”
The Norfolk District Attorney’s office remains silent on inquiries regarding the trial’s conclusion.
Meanwhile, Read’s family has consistently maintained her innocence throughout the tumultuous three-year ordeal. Her father, William Read, vocally supported her during and after her second trial, expressing gratitude to the supporters who rallied outside the courtroom and to the online advocates championing her cause.
Following the trial’s conclusion, William stated, “I want to acknowledge the greatest team of attorneys. Our first one that we found was David Yannetti. We added Alan Jackson and Liza Little. Bob Alessi you know about. It was a fantastic team, but we needed them all to defeat this.”
In an interview with a local NBC affiliate, William donned a Lexus golf shirt, reiterating his daughter’s innocence. He asserted, “We know Karen as our daughter. Had she done something and struck John O’Keefe, we would have been the first to be notified. She would have said, ‘Mom and dad, I will take my medicine,’ and it was quite the opposite.”
Janet Read, Karen’s mother, expressed appreciation for those who supported her daughter and made it clear that she intends to pay it forward.
William Read, aligning with the sentiments of his daughter’s defense attorneys, encouraged supporters to make their voices heard by voting in upcoming elections.
As of now, the family of John O’Keefe has not publicly responded to requests for comments on this unfolding situation. The complexities that envelop this case reflect broader implications for the legal community and society’s approach to justice.
