Irish golfer Leona Maguire encountered a series of challenges during the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, battling discomfort from tick bites while striving for a strong performance.
Having sustained the bites at Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin during the U.S. Women’s Open, Maguire is currently undergoing treatment with doxycycline. Despite this, she displayed visible signs of her condition at the Women’s PGA Championship, where a swollen hand drew the attention of reporters.
Describing the blister on her hand as resembling a “pepperoni,” Maguire provided insight into her suffering. She remarked that her skin felt extremely sensitive, comparing it to the fragility of tissue paper.
The sweltering Texas heat added another layer of difficulty for Maguire as she navigated the tournament course. She concluded her first round four strokes behind the leader Jeeno Thitikul, but ultimately struggled to keep pace throughout the competition.
In the final round, Maguire shot a 76 and ended the tournament tied for 19th place alongside notable players such as Nelly Korda, Miranda Wang, and Youmin Hwang. Minjee Lee clinched victory in the championship.
Despite the setbacks, Maguire expressed gratitude towards the sponsors and organizers of the event. Through a post on her Instagram account, she thanked KPMG and KPMG Sports for their unwavering dedication to promoting women’s golf and for the exceptional hospitality received during the tournament.
Maguire stated on social media, “PGA Frisco proved to be a tough test — the wind didn’t let up, but neither did we! It felt great to be back in the competitive mix on a Sunday afternoon.”
Since joining the LPGA Tour in 2020, Maguire has made significant strides in her golfing career. This season alone, she has participated in 14 tournaments, successfully making the cut in 10 of them. Her earnings so far this season have reached approximately $315,000, further solidifying her status among elite golfers.
As she continues to navigate the ups and downs of professional golfing, Leona Maguire remains a testament to resilience. Her ability to compete, even in the face of adversity, showcases her dedication to the sport.
The road ahead for Maguire involves balancing her health and performance as she prepares for future competitions. As she charts her path in the LPGA Tour, expectations remain high, both for her and for fans who have followed her journey closely.
Maguire’s commitment to improving her game, coupled with her strong support network, positions her well for continued success in upcoming tournaments.
