An archaeologist has recently uncovered the presumed remains of a long-hidden Byzantine settlement, unlocking fresh perspectives on the history of Christianity in the Middle East.
Musallam R. Al-Rawahneh, an associate professor of archaeology at Mu’tah University in Jordan, made his groundbreaking discoveries public in the journal Gephyra in May.
Al-Rawahneh believes he has found the ancient site of Tharais, guided by the intriguing Madaba Map – a stunning mosaic that has captivated historians for centuries.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Al-Rawahneh indicated that he located the site near the Jordanian village of El-ʿIrāq, particularly in an area known as Ain Al-Qala’a.
Despite being lost to obscurity, he noted that this once-thriving settlement was situated strategically along vital trade routes leading to the southeastern Dead Sea region.
During the excavation, Al-Rawahneh and his team discovered an array of artifacts, which included pottery shards, stone tools, and remnants of glass. They also uncovered fossils, adding to the site’s archaeological significance.
The area featured numerous architectural remains, most notably a Byzantine church. Al-Rawahneh expressed his excitement over the findings, particularly the basilica-style church and an olive oil press.
The church, characterized by its basilica-style, revealed fragments of mosaic floors typical of Byzantine Christian heritage.
Al-Rawahneh remarked that the design reflected key aspects of Byzantine architecture, including a prominent entrance and potential remnants of decorative elements.
Among the discoveries were various inscriptions, which the archaeologist indicated were linked to ancient funerary customs.
While further research is necessary, Al-Rawahneh suggested that some inscriptions may include Christian imagery, offering vital information about ancient religious practices.
Al-Rawahneh elaborated on what may have led to Tharais becoming
