Over 30 mayors gathered with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during a news conference to denounce the recent deployment of National Guard troops and Marines throughout the city. This move comes amidst escalating tensions related to federal immigration enforcement strategies.
Intensifying Accusations Against the Federal Government
Mayor Bass directed sharp criticism at the White House, questioning the motivations behind federal intervention in local law enforcement. She claimed that the actions taken by the federal government felt like an experiment aimed at testing the limits of federal authority over state powers, leaving citizens in a state of fear.
In response to these claims, President Donald Trump took to the Truth Social platform on Thursday morning, asserting that Los Angeles would have descended into chaos without the military’s presence. He hinted at the idea that federal intervention was essential to restoring order amid the protests and unrest.
The President’s Defense of Federal Forces
Trump’s post emphasized that the city had experienced a safer environment in recent nights. He stated, “Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job.” His remarks reflected a stance that credited the military presence as pivotal in preventing further violence.
Further defending his position, Trump slammed Governor Gavin Newsom of California, accusing him of losing control over the situation in the state.
Local Leaders Condemn Military Presence
During the news conference, Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores, a Marine Corps veteran, voiced strong opposition against what he described as the militarization of immigration enforcement. He characterized the deployment of military personnel on American soil as an alarming escalation that has no place in neighborhoods.
Flores expressed a unified sentiment among the mayors, stating, “As mayors across this region, we stand united in rejecting fear-based tactics that target immigrant communities and erode public trust.” This statement highlighted the concerns surrounding the implications of military involvement in local law enforcement matters.
National Guard Troop Deployments on the Rise
Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman informed The Associated Press that approximately 2,000 National Guard soldiers are currently stationed in Los Angeles, with plans to increase that number by an additional 2,000 soldiers and around 700 Marines. He acknowledged the heightened atmosphere of concern amid ongoing protests across the nation.
As he addressed the situation, Sherman reinforced that his focus remained on the current events unfolding in Los Angeles, yet acknowledged the broader implications of the continuing unrest.
Curfews and Arrests in Downtown Los Angeles
Amid this turmoil, Downtown Los Angeles has been placed under a curfew. Law enforcement has made nearly 400 arrests and detentions since Saturday, primarily for failure to disperse. However, some arrests have included more serious charges, such as assaulting police officers, possession of a Molotov cocktail, and unlawful possession of firearms.
In the midst of these confrontations, nine police officers have sustained injuries, although most were minor in nature.
