The LSU Tigers have emerged as NCAA baseball champions once again. They secured the title by defeating Coastal Carolina 5-3 on Sunday, completing a decisive sweep in the best-of-three Men’s College World Series final.
This thrilling match showcased a significant moment early on when Coastal Carolina’s head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the first inning. At the time, LSU had a runner on second base, contributing to the heightened tension on the field.
Schnall expressed his intense dissatisfaction with a call made by home plate umpire Angel Campos. His frustrations boiled over as he shouted, “You missed three pitches,” prompting the ejection.
As the situation escalated, two umpires rushed to separate Schnall from Campos, leading to one umpire falling during the heated exchange. First base coach Matt Schilling also received an ejection, underscoring the drama that unfolded within the first inning.
Despite the whirlwind of ejections, LSU stayed focused. Coastal Carolina took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on Dean Mihos’ solo home run.
The Tigers responded swiftly with a run scored in the top of the third inning. Ethan Frey hit a crucial double to left field, bringing Daniel Dickinson home and leveling the score at 1-1.
The game dramatically shifted in the top of the fourth inning when LSU exploded for four runs. With the bases loaded, Chris Stanfield delivered a critical single, driving in two runs to give LSU a 3-1 lead. Moments later, Derek Curiel followed up with another single, bringing the runners on second and third across home plate, extending the Tigers’ lead.
Though Coastal Carolina faced an uphill battle, they showed resilience. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wells Sykes launched a two-run homer, narrowing the deficit to just two runs.
However, LSU’s Chase Shores effectively shut down any lingering hopes for the Chanticleers. After relieving Anthony Eyanson, who pitched 6.1 innings and struck out nine batters, Shores maintained control on the mound. Over his 2.2 innings of work, he allowed only one hit while striking out four batters.
The game concluded with a standout double play, initiated by Shores’ final pitch. This critical play solidified LSU’s victory and clinched the championship.
With this win, LSU has now claimed two out of the last three College World Series titles, having previously celebrated their triumph in 2023. The Tigers’ eighth championship title further cements their status as one of the premier teams in collegiate baseball.
Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina remains in pursuit of their first title since 2016, reflecting their determination to reclaim their spot among the elite in college baseball.
As the season wraps up, the LSU Tigers have once again showcased their prowess on the diamond, establishing themselves firmly in NCAA baseball history. The nation eagerly anticipates whether they can continue their winning streak in the seasons to come.
