Former NFL offensive tackle Luis Sharpe, a standout player and three-time Pro Bowler, died on Friday at the age of 65. The news was confirmed by his former team, the Arizona Cardinals.
Sharpe dedicated 13 seasons of his professional career to the Cardinals franchise. He was drafted as a first-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Throughout his career, Sharpe only played for the Cardinals; however, he experienced the game in three different cities. He started his first six seasons in St. Louis before the franchise relocated to Phoenix, where he spent the next six seasons in Arizona. His remarkable journey mirrored the evolution of the team he devoted himself to.
In his final season, the franchise was rebranded as the Arizona Cardinals. Sharpe made a lasting impact during his time on the field, starting all 189 games he played.
Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill issued a statement highlighting Sharpe’s exceptional strength and toughness. He stated, “Throughout his lengthy and accomplished career with the Cardinals, Luis Sharpe exhibited an uncommon type of strength and toughness that made him so successful as a player.”
Bidwill also acknowledged Sharpe’s resilience in the face of personal challenges, expressing condolences to Sharpe’s family and former teammates.
After retiring from the NFL, Sharpe faced significant battles, including a struggle with drug addiction, which even led him to serve time in jail. His story took a positive turn when he decided to turn his life around and get sober.
In 2015, he relocated to Michigan from Arizona, seeking a fresh start. “I feel a sense of purpose now,” Sharpe shared in a 2020 interview. “I feel more significant than I ever did when I was playing professional football. My life is better today. I tell people all the time, ‘What I thought was my greatest curse has turned into my greatest blessing.’”
In the later years of his life, Sharpe became a beacon of hope for others. He spent time counseling individuals at a sobriety clinic in Detroit and worked alongside the NFL to support former players as they navigated health issues post-career.
Sharpe’s transformation was inspiring, as he realized the importance of sharing his story. “I recognize today I have the life I have because I’ve overcome so many obstacles and so many challenges,” he stated. “God wanted me to go out and do exactly what I’m doing, to share my life with others, to tell them my fall from grace and say, ‘If I can stand before you today as a productive member of society, so can you.’”
The passing of Luis Sharpe has left a profound impact on the NFL community. Tributes have poured in from former teammates, fans, and athletes alike, commemorating his legacy both on and off the field.
Sharpe’s dedication to helping others, combined with his athletic achievements, defines his life and career. His presence will be missed, but his story serves as an enduring inspiration for many.
As a player, Sharpe exemplified determination and strength, often displaying precisely what it meant to be a leader on the field. Now, as we remember him, he continues to inspire those who are facing their own battles.
His legacy will be celebrated not only for his contributions to the Cardinals but also for his courage in confronting personal challenges. The NFL community has lost a true warrior, but Luis Sharpe’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those he impacted.
