Luka Doncic officially joined the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, shortly after a trade that sent him from the Dallas Mavericks to the storied franchise. The deal has created a buzz throughout the NBA community and left many fans in disbelief.
The monumental trade, which involved a three-team collaboration with the Utah Jazz, sent Anthony Davis and Max Christie to Dallas. Doncic expressed his deep surprise over the unexpected news. He shared that he received a call about the trade in the middle of the night, which left him in a state of disbelief.
“I was almost asleep when I got the call. I had to double-check to see if it was April 1,” Doncic reminisced, highlighting his initial shock. “I didn’t really believe it at first. It was a big shock.”
For Luka, leaving Dallas wasn’t just about changing teams; it represented a significant life transition. He has called Texas home since being drafted by the Mavericks in 2018. Reflecting on his departure, Doncic admitted that it was challenging to bid farewell to a city that had embraced him both personally and professionally.
“It was a big shock,” he reiterated. “(Dallas) was home, so those were really hard moments for me.” However, his mood shifted as he considered the opportunity that awaited him in Los Angeles. “But now I get to play in the greatest club in the world, and I’m excited for this new journey,” he added.
“Honestly, it was hard at first,” Doncic stated, describing the emotional toll of the trade. “It felt like these last 48 hours lasted a month. Emotionally, it was tough, but today feels much better.” The prospect of playing for the Lakers, a franchise rich in history and success, has rejuvenated him.
A significant aspect of Doncic’s excitement lies in the opportunity to play alongside his idol, LeBron James. Doncic expressed his admiration for the legendary player, calling the chance to team up with him a “dream come true.”
“I always looked up to him,” Doncic said fondly. “There are so many things I can learn from him, and I’m just excited to absorb everything and play with him. It’s an amazing feeling.”
Currently, Doncic is recovering from a calf strain, which has sidelined him since Christmas. However, he announced plans to engage in 5-on-5 practices on Wednesday, paving the way for his anticipated debut in Lakers colors. The team will soon decide when he will step onto the court for the first time.
Luka Doncic’s arrival in Los Angeles marks the start of an exciting new chapter for both the player and the franchise. As he gears up to join forces with LeBron James and contribute to the Lakers’ legacy, fans eagerly await his first game in purple and gold.
