Maine Governor Janet Mills Rejects Trump’s Apology Demand Over Transgender Athlete Policies

In a recent turn of events, President Donald Trump called upon Maine Governor Janet Mills to apologize for her state’s resistance to his executive order regarding transgender athletes. Over the weekend, Mills addressed the media in Bangor, firmly stating her position without extending any form of apology.

Governor Mills Stand on the Rule of Law

Mills articulated her perspective to reporters, emphasizing that the state’s reluctance to comply with Trump’s mandate is hinged on what she describes as the “rule of law.” She conveyed her stance, saying, “My issue is about the rule of law, pure and simple. It’s not about transgender sports; it’s about who makes the laws and who enforces the laws. I read the Constitution. The Constitution states that the president, the chief executive, shall ensure that the laws are faithfully executed. It doesn’t grant him the power to create laws from thin air with a tweet or an executive order.”

Critique of Trump’s Policies

In her remarks, Governor Mills did not hold back from critiquing Trump’s broader policies, particularly concerning abortion and tariffs. Notably, she refrained from mentioning Trump by name, instead opting to address the issues at hand.

Mills highlighted the urgency of protecting women and girls, stating, “We’ve seen policies that threaten women and girls across the country. If the current occupant of the White House aims to protect women and girls, he should focus on those suffering miscarriages and dying due to a lack of basic healthcare in various states across the country.”

Economic Concerns Over Federal Influence

Transitioning from social issues to economic implications, Mills pointed out the need for an economic plan from the current administration. “The issue isn’t solely about transgender sports. Residents of Maine and the nation anticipate a sound economic strategy from the White House. Up until now, we have only witnessed tariffs and threats that jeopardize our economy,” she remarked.

Trump’s Demand and Political Tensions

Trump’s request for an apology stemmed from a Truth Social post on Saturday, where he expressed dissatisfaction with Mills’ statement regarding transgender athletes. He noted, “While the State of Maine has issued an apology regarding their Governor’s strong, but incorrect statement about men participating in women’s sports, we have yet to hear directly from the Governor herself, and she is the principal figure in such matters.”

Trump continued, stating, “Thus, we require a full-throated apology from the Governor, along with a commitment that she will not challenge the Federal Government unlawfully again, before this matter can be settled. I trust that she will handle this easily. Thank you for your attention to this matter and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! DJT”

The Escalation of Political Discontent

This confrontation originated on February 20 when Trump suggested that federal funding could be threatened due to Maine’s refusal to ban transgender athletes from women’s sports during a GOP governors’ meeting. In response, Mills’ office issued a warning of potential legal action against the Trump administration if federal funds were withheld.

Following a heated exchange at the White House during a bipartisan governors’ meeting, Mills asserted her commitment to compliance with state and federal laws. When Trump questioned her compliance, she responded, “I’m adhering to state and federal laws.” Trump countered, declaring, “Well, we are the federal law.”

Legal Challenges Ahead

Confrontation escalated as Trump warned Mills about federal funding. He stated, “You better comply because you risk losing all federal funding if you don’t. Your constituents, even if somewhat liberal — although I performed very well there — don’t support men competing in women’s sports, so compliance is essential, or federal funds will be at stake.” Mills confidently replied, “We’ll see you in court.” Trump reflected on this statement by asserting, “Good, I’ll see you in court. I look forward to that. It should be straightforward, and enjoy life after the gubernatorial term because your political career may be nearing its end.”

Federal Investigation and Policy Compliance

Subsequent to this confrontation, the Department of Education launched a Title IX investigation into Maine just hours later. Since the initiation of this investigation, several protests opposing Mills have occurred outside the state capital. Moreover, the Maine University System halted cooperation with the Trump administration, ensuring that no transgender athletes can participate in women’s sports after a temporary funding pause.

Recently, the Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights (OCR) found the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association, and Greely High School in violation of Title IX for their policies that permit transgender inclusion in girls’ sports. OCR’s acting director criticized the ongoing noncompliance and underscored the responsibility of the state in protecting female athletes’ rights.

Call to Action for Maine’s Leadership

He stated, “What HHS is asking of the Maine Department of Education and associated entities is straightforward — safeguard female athletes’ rights. Girls deserve sports free from male competitors. If Maine does not voluntarily comply with Title IX, HHS will enforce it to the fullest extent of the law.”

The OCR’s announcement hinted at potential repercussions for failing to adhere to the federal executive order. The state has been given until this Thursday to amend its policies through a signed agreement or risk referral to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Maine’s leadership now faces a critical juncture in determining the balance between state sovereignty and federal law regarding transgender athlete policies.
