In a significant development regarding one of aviation’s greatest mysteries, the Malaysian government has granted final approval for a Texas-based company to recommence the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. This decision comes more than a decade after the airplane vanished without a trace.
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, terms of a ‘no-find, no fee’ agreement have been finalized with Ocean Infinity. This contract allows the company to conduct a seabed search over a new area spanning 5,800 square miles. Importantly, the company will receive $70 million only if they successfully locate the wreckage.
Minister Loke emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to continue with the search operation. He stated that this effort aims to provide closure for the families of the passengers aboard the ill-fated flight MH370, which went missing on March 8, 2014.
The Boeing 777 had taken off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing and disappeared approximately 90 seconds after entering the airspace of Malaysia. All 239 individuals on board were seemingly gone without a trace.
The 2014 disappearance of Flight MH370 continues to baffle aviation experts and investigators alike. Initial satellite data indicated that the plane deviated from its intended flight path, ultimately heading south towards the far-southern Indian Ocean where it is believed to have crashed.
Despite an extensive multinational search effort that spanned several years, no significant clues emerged to suggest the location of MH370. Some debris washed ashore on the east African coast and several islands in the Indian Ocean, but the main wreckage remains elusive.
A private search conducted by Ocean Infinity in 2018 also failed to find the missing aircraft. However, CEO Oliver Punkett stated earlier this year that the company has upgraded its technology since that time.
Although Loke indicated that a contract with Ocean Infinity would be signed soon, he did not disclose specific details regarding the terms. Reports suggest that the company has already dispatched a search vessel to the designated area. Additionally, December’s indications pointed to the period from January to April as optimal for search operations.
Relatives of the passengers and crew from MH370, represented by the group Voice370, have voiced their ongoing concerns about the unresolved fate of the flight. They highlight that until the mystery is unraveled, the threat to global aviation safety remains a pressing issue.
In their statement, they express that being in the dark about what happened to MH370 poses a potential risk for future flights. They believe it is of utmost importance that the search is pursued to its conclusion.
This renewed search effort by the Malaysian government offers a glimmer of hope for many families who have waited years for answers. The fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 remains one of the most puzzling cases in aviation history, and the world watches intently as this next chapter unfolds.
