“They welcomed me into their home and insisted I stay for breakfast,” he recalled. “Their hospitality exemplifies the kindness at the heart of our city.” He spent close to an hour with the grieving family, urging the public to recognize the sacrifices made by individuals like Islam and Aland Etienne, another shooting victim who was also an immigrant.

Mamdani emphasized the significance of their stories, stating, “It is important to remember that both Officer Islam and Aland Etienne came to this city striving for a better life—immigrants whose sacrifices lay the groundwork for their families to thrive.”

The mass shooting occurred on a Monday, when a lone gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, opened fire in a midtown Manhattan office building. The rampage resulted in the deaths of four, including the aforementioned victims. After committing the heinous act, Tamura took his own life.

The motive behind the shooting remains shrouded in mystery. Reports indicate that the assailant harbored grievances related to the NFL, allegedly attributing his ongoing issues with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) to his experiences in football.

I face much greater threats than before,” he admitted. “With this reality comes necessary precautions that I wish I could forgo.
