A man has been detained following accusations of placing incendiary devices near a fire station in the suburban vicinity of Washington, D.C.
Slater Chaia, a resident of District Heights, Maryland, faces serious charges including possession of a destructive device and possession of incendiary material intended for creating a destructive device. These allegations stem from incidents involving the placement of what has been described as makeshift Molotov cocktails near the Capitol Heights Fire Station 805. He has also been charged with reckless endangerment.
Surveillance footage shows Chaia approaching the fire station property with two bottles in his possession. He was seen placing these bottles on the ground near a flagpole before moving one closer to the pavement, just a few feet from a mailbox. Subsequently, he reportedly returned to the flagpole, took the second bottle, and placed it inside the mailbox.
Previous Incidents and Potential Risks
The video evidence captured on August 13 around 8 a.m. is crucial to the investigation. However, WUSA9 reports that Chaia had allegedly placed similar devices near the fire station on two previous occasions: once on June 1 and another on July 15, although those incidents did not have video documentation.
To aid in the investigation, police released images of a distinctive Members Only jacket featuring a Tom and Jerry cartoon theme that Chaia wore during the incidents. This jacket may help identify him further.
The bottles in question were reported to contain an incendiary liquid along with wicks, indicating a serious threat. Local authorities have expressed concerns regarding the potential hazards associated with these devices.

According to NBC 4 Washington, law enforcement officials believe that the fire station was intentionally targeted. However, the motive behind the actions remains unclear. Prince George’s County Bureau of Homeland Security Deputy Chief James McCreary emphasized the urgency of addressing the matter, stating, “God forbid one of our young people get ahold of one of these devices and become harmed.”
McCreary pointed out that the earlier devices discovered were inert and posed no immediate danger. Nevertheless, he warned that the sophistication of the devices appeared to be increasing. “The initial devices were ineffective, but they seem to be progressing,” he said. He added, “The last device we had at this location could have been something that would have harmed someone if it was activated.”

As of now, Chaia remains in custody without bond as the investigation continues. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, known as the ATF, is also looking into the specific details surrounding this case and analyzing potential links to broader security threats.
