Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls on Trump to Commute George Santos’ Sentence as Judicial Overreach

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, is advocating for President Donald Trump to commute the federal prison sentence of former Congressman George Santos. Greene describes Santos’ punishment as a significant injustice and an overreach by the judicial system.

The ex-congressman was sentenced to 87 months in prison, which is just over seven years, following a guilty plea in 2024 for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos began serving his sentence on July 25.

Santos received the maximum penalty in April from U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert and was also ordered to repay nearly $374,000 and forfeit more than $205,000 stemming from his fraudulent activities.

An investigation into Santos exposed various wrongdoings, including campaign finance fraud, donor identity theft, and illegal claims for unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Greene made her appeal public in a post on the social media platform X, revealing that she sent a letter to the Office of the Pardon Attorney requesting that Trump intervene on Santos’ behalf.

In her post, Greene argued that a seven-year prison sentence for campaign-related offenses is severe, particularly when many members of Congress who have committed more serious crimes remain unpunished. She stated, “George Santos has taken responsibility. He’s shown remorse. It’s time to correct this injustice. We must demand equal justice under the law.”

Greene’s letter was addressed to Edward R. Martin Jr., the pardon attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. In it, she acknowledged the severity of Santos’ actions while also advocating for a more equitable judicial approach.

“As a Member of Congress, I collaborated with Mr. Santos on various issues and can attest to his dedication to serving the constituents of New York who elected him,” she wrote. Greene also highlighted discussions she had with a pastor associated with Santos, who affirmed that Santos is genuinely remorseful and believes the sentence imposed is a serious injustice.

Greene emphasized that, while Santos’ actions warranted punishment, many fellow lawmakers have engaged in far more egregious misconduct without facing any criminal repercussions. She expressed her belief in accountability but condemned the sentence as an excessive response.

The Investigative Findings Against Santos

According to prosecutors, Santos and his campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, manipulated donor reports to secure funding from the national Republican Party. They falsely reported contributions from Santos’ family and fabricated a $500,000 loan from him, despite him having less than $8,000 in funds.

Santos also misappropriated credit card details from donors, notably targeting elderly individuals with cognitive impairments. He made unauthorized purchases that funded both his campaign and personal expenses, as reported by the Department of Justice.

Fraudulent Claims During the Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Santos unlawfully claimed over $24,000 in unemployment benefits while he was employed at an investment firm. Additionally, he provided misleading financial disclosures to Congress.

Background on Santos’ Congressional Career

In 2022, Santos achieved election in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, successfully flipping the seat for the Republican Party. However, many of his credentials were quickly debunked, including false claims about academic achievements, employment on Wall Street, and family connections to significant historical events.

Due to a severe ethics report, Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023, marking him as one of only six members to be removed from the House of Representatives.

Despite being imprisoned, Santos has remained active on social media and has even started selling video messages on the platform Cameo.

If not pardoned, Santos is expected to remain incarcerated until at least early 2032. Reports indicate that he has reached out to President Trump for clemency.

As of now, neither Greene nor the White House has provided a response to inquiries regarding this matter from news outlets.
