Actor Mark Ruffalo recently called out podcast host Joe Rogan for his delayed criticism of President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration enforcement strategies. This public exchange echoes broader discussions surrounding immigration policies in the United States.
During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan described the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on workplaces as “insane.” This statement prompted Ruffalo to address Rogan through social media, emphasizing the urgency of the issue.
On Instagram Threads, Ruffalo shared a direct message to Rogan. He stated, “Dear Joe Rogan. It’s a little late now to pretend like Project 2025 didn’t exist and wasn’t the playbook all along. You are either not that smart or not that dumb. It’s hard to tell at this point.” This statement signifies Ruffalo’s frustration with Rogan’s sudden pivot, suggesting that the podcast host’s past endorsements may have influenced his current views.
Rogan’s critique arose during a conversation with Amjad Masad, the CEO of Replit. He expressed concern about the targeting of migrant workers, stating, “We were told there would be no — well, there’s two things that are insane. One is the targeting of migrant workers. Not cartel members, not gang members, not drug dealers. Just construction workers. Showing up in construction sites, raiding them. Gardeners. Like, really?”
This perspective highlights a growing unease among many regarding the impact of ICE enforcement on essential laborers, particularly in the construction and agricultural sectors.
In the wake of these critiques, President Trump announced plans to create exemptions for specific industries affected by immigration raids. He stated he is “working on exemptions for laborers” primarily in agriculture and hospitality. This initiative aims to address concerns raised by farmers and industry stakeholders about the potential loss of critical workforce members due to ICE actions.
Trump’s proposed solution involves a new type of work permit. Under this system, workers who have contributed to the U.S. labor force for years may remain legally, enabling them to pay taxes while eschewing citizenship. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining a stable workforce: “We’re going to take care of our farmers and hotel workers, but we’re working on it right now. And Ron DeSantis is going to be involved,” Trump added during a visit to a new immigration detention facility.
Trump articulated his vision for this permit system, stating, “They can be here legally. They can pay taxes and everything. They’re not getting citizenship, but they get other things. And the farmers need them to do the work.” This statement underscores the administration’s dual focus on agricultural workforce needs and labor regulation.
Mark Ruffalo has long been an outspoken advocate for progressive causes, particularly concerning immigration. Leading up to this social media exchange, he participated in a “No Kings” protest in New York City where he emphasized the importance of immigrants to American society. At the protest, he wore a hat emblazoned with the word “immigrant.”
