FIRST ON FOX: Mark Zuckerberg’s philanthropic organization has officially terminated its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs along with social advocacy initiatives on immigration reform and racial equity grantmaking. This significant decision was confirmed to Fox News Digital.
The announcement came from Marc Malandro, chief operating officer of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, who communicated the changes to staff in a company-wide email.
This latest move follows the earlier decision by Meta, Zuckerberg’s primary company, to dismantle its DEI programs a month ago, aiming to prioritize hiring the most talented individuals across its various teams.
In addition to ending DEI initiatives, Meta has also dissolved its fact-checking program and lifted restrictions on speech across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The company admitted that previous content moderation efforts had “gone too far.”
Malandro’s memo emphasized that leadership has been closely reviewing the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s programs and strategies to ensure alignment with their mission as a science-focused philanthropy and staying mindful of the current legal landscape.
He reiterated that the decision to phase out social advocacy efforts had been made years ago, with funding for these initiatives already curtailed. Malandro also introduced changes to CZI’s hiring and human resources practices concerning diversity.
Malandro outlined that CZI is concentrating the majority of its resources on developing Biohubs and supporting research teams dedicated to addressing complex biological and health-related questions.
This focus includes tackling significant scientific challenges expected to contribute to breakthroughs in disease management and prevention. These projects range from creating AI-based cellular models to advanced imaging systems for observing live cells and exploring the immune system’s role in disease prevention and understanding.
In his correspondence, Malandro made it clear that with CZI’s shift toward a science-centered approach, previous commitments to social advocacy funding have been phased out.
He specifically mentioned the cessation of activities related to immigration reform and the completion of the five-year program initiated in 2020 for racial equity grantmaking. While there are some multi-year grant commitments still in place, these will not extend to support active political movements.
Looking ahead, Malandro expects CZI to maintain a growing emphasis on advancing the fields of biology and artificial intelligence. This aligns with their mission to provide scientists with the necessary tools to combat diseases more effectively in the future.
Malandro referenced the changing regulatory and legal environment as a critical factor in the decision to eliminate the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility team at CZI. He noted that the three individuals from this team would transition into new roles within the organization.
Furthermore, CZI has opted to discontinue its Diverse Slate Practice, which was previously aimed at ensuring diverse candidate pools for job openings.
Moving forward, the organization plans to widen its search for top candidates while emphasizing the selection of the individual best suited for each position.
Despite these changes, Malandro reassured staff of CZI’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workspace. He emphasized their aim to build a team that reflects diverse experiences, thoughts, and opinions.
Efforts to support employees include both employee resource groups open to all and a focus on rewarding individual initiative, excellence, and hard work.
This shift in focus marks a pivotal moment for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as it redefines its priorities within philanthropy. By concentrating on scientific research and development, CZI aims to drive forward monumental changes in health and biology, even as it steps back from direct social advocacy efforts.
As the organization pivots towards these ambitious scientific goals, the implications for its future operations and community engagement remain to be seen, but they affirm a commitment to innovation in addressing the biggest challenges in biology and health.
