The current political climate has intensified discussions around immigration policies after a recent murder case in Maryland involving an illegal immigrant. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has charged a Guatemalan national with the murder of a mother, Lesbia Mileth Ramirez Guerra, merely days after Senator Chris Van Hollen returned from a controversial visit to El Salvador.
Keycy Robinson Alexis Barrera-Rosa, aged 23, was apprehended by ICE on April 5 in Charles County. He faced murder charges on April 23 after the discovery of Guerra’s body buried near a state forest in La Plata. The incident has raised urgent concerns regarding crime committed by illegal immigrants in Maryland.
In a statement, ICE affirmed that Barrera-Rosa would face full prosecution for the alleged murder, highlighting the organization’s commitment to dealing with violent offenders. The timing of this arrest has caused some to question the implications of recent political actions surrounding immigration reform.
Senator Van Hollen returned to Maryland shortly before the arrest, after targeting a deported alleged MS-13 member, Kilmar Garcia, during his visit to El Salvador. Since the news broke regarding Guerra’s tragic fate, Van Hollen has remained notably silent on the matter. He previously addressed the issue of illegal immigrant crime in a statement where he underscored the need for community safety.
“We must keep our communities safe and prioritize the detention of violent offenders,” Van Hollen stated in January when he opposed the Laken Riley Act, which aimed to address crime among illegal immigrants.
The dynamics surrounding Van Hollen’s actions have become a focal point of criticism from the Republican Party. The National Republican Senatorial Committee recently launched a satirical advertisement parodying Van Hollen’s El Salvador trip and tying it to crime caused by illegal immigrants.
This backlash intensified as another illegal immigrant, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, was found guilty of killing Rachel Morin on a popular trail in Bel Air, Maryland. Following this case, Morin’s mother criticized Van Hollen publicly, directing her outrage towards the senator for his actions supporting Garcia.
