Massachusetts Governor Praises Meeting with Chinese Diplomat Amid Controversy

FIRST ON FOX: A Democratic governor recently shared her enthusiasm about a meeting with a Chinese Communist Party diplomat, expressing gratitude for the engagement.

Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts gained attention on social media this Wednesday evening when she posted photos of her meeting with Chen Li, the consul general of the People’s Republic of China, in New York City. Healey’s post showcased a proactive approach to international relations, particularly highlighting Massachusetts’ vibrant Chinese-American community.

In her message on X, Healey wrote, “Massachusetts is home to a vibrant Chinese-American community, and China is one of our largest trading partners. Glad to welcome Ambassador H.E. Chen Li of the People’s Republic to China to the State House, and grateful for the opportunity to discuss future collaboration!”

The three accompanying photographs featured both Healey and Li, who oversees diplomatic relations across nearly a dozen states. A notable figure in one photo was Yvonne Hao, the former Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development. Although Hao resigned earlier this month, she continues to serve as an unpaid advisor within Healey’s administration.

A press release from Healey’s office emphasized that Massachusetts and China maintain significant economic and cultural ties. Both parties committed to working together for mutual benefits.

Economic Impact and Trade Relations

Healey’s press release provided insight into the economic dimensions of this relationship. “China is Massachusetts’ third largest trading partner, with over $7.2 billion worth of goods exchanged in 2024. In that year, Massachusetts imported $3.4 billion in goods from China, which included toys, games, and sports equipment, as well as apparel and accessories,” it stated. The document also highlighted that Massachusetts exported $3.8 billion worth of goods to China, encompassing industrial machinery, medical devices, and plastics.

Healey attempted to defend the meeting by posting her record of engaging with foreign officials during their visits to the state. She mentioned her interactions with a variety of diplomats, noting her meeting with the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States.

Responses from the Chinese Diplomat

In response to Healey’s post, Li remarked on his honor in having what he described as a pleasant conversation with the governor. He stated that his focus is aligned with fostering cooperation between China and Massachusetts.

Controversies Surrounding the CCP

Despite the positive tone of the meeting, Chen Li has a history of promoting the messages of the Chinese Communist Party. He has publicly dismissed allegations of genocide against the Uyghur population as fabricated. His statements, which attempt to refute international criticisms of China’s human rights record, raised eyebrows among critics of the CCP.

Michael Sobolik, a Hudson Institute senior fellow and expert on U.S.-China relations, remarked that the Chinese Communist Party continually seeks avenues to infiltrate U.S. businesses and civil society. He urged vigilance, stating, “We shouldn’t make their job easier for them.” This sentiment reflects ongoing concerns regarding undue influence from foreign powers within U.S. political and economic spheres.

A Pattern of Engagement

Earlier this year, Chen garnered attention for his appearances at New York City parades, where he interacted with prominent figures such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

This engagement marks a continuation of previous patterns established by Chen’s predecessor, Huang Ping. During Ping’s tenure from 2018 to 2024, he was implicated in an unsealed indictment involving Linda Sun, a former top aide to Governor Kathy Hochul. The indictment described how Sun had conspired to influence governmental communications, particularly omitting references to Uyghur issues in public speeches.

Allegations and Accusations

According to the indictment, Sun confided to Ping about the content of a speech that initially planned to address the Uyghur situation, yet she ensured that such references were quietly eliminated after pushing back against a speechwriter’s proposal. This raised concerns about ethical governance and transparency in the administration.
