A video that went viral depicts a Massachusetts ICE arrest disrupted by a crowd of around 25 people. The incident has been labeled chaotic by local authorities, highlighting tensions surrounding immigration enforcement.
The footage, recorded in Worcester on Thursday, reveals residents rallying together with chants of “don’t take the mother!” and “no warrant!” as a woman is escorted into an SUV by ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. Before the vehicle could leave the scene, several protestors placed their hands on the hood of the SUV, voicing their dissent loudly.
The situation escalated when a CBP agent and a bystander began to shove each other as the agent attempted to detain the woman. Worcester Police Department responded to the unfolding scene after declaring an unlawful assembly, warning that arrests would be made if the situation did not de-escalate.
Joseph Petty, the Democratic mayor of Worcester, expressed his distress over the incident on X. He stated, “I am disturbed to hear about today’s events involving ICE. As someone who prides themselves on leading a welcoming city, I am devastated to hear about the separation of a family, especially with Mother’s Day around the corner.”
The mayor highlighted the fear that families in the community experience in relation to ICE actions, calling it a nightmare for many residents. He has requested a detailed account of the incident from the City Manager, emphasizing that city officials were not informed beforehand about the detainment, stating that such occurrences should not take place within the community.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, had not immediately responded to requests for comments regarding the incident. The Worcester Police Department reported that they received calls about a federal agent surrounded by a significant number of civilians around 11:13 a.m.
The police added that they received reports claiming that ICE officers were present but refused to demonstrate any documentation to the crowd. Officers responded in an effort to maintain peace and ensure no one was injured during the chaotic scene.
Upon arriving, officers witnessed federal agents from various agencies struggling to take the woman into custody. This led to a tumultuous scenario where crowd members were physically engaging with both federal agents and local police in attempts to hinder the detainment.
According to the Worcester Police Department, federal agents had detained the woman and were attempting to leave the scene in a vehicle. The crowd’s response was unruly, with individuals attempting to obstruct the agents and officers. In facing this volatile environment, police worked to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
As the vehicle was about to depart, a young female carrying a newborn positioned herself in front of the car. Officers expressed concern for the infant’s safety, informing her that her actions were endangering the child. Eventually, she complied by handing the newborn to another person, but as the vehicle began to move away, she chased after it and kicked the passenger side. Officers responded by taking her into custody.
This individual has been charged with reckless endangerment of a child, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Fortunately, the infant remained unharmed during the ordeal.
While law enforcement was engaged with the initial female detainee, 38-year-old Ashley Spring from Worcester allegeedly pushed several officers and threw an unidentified liquid on them. She was arrested and faces charges including assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct, and interfering with a police officer.
The Worcester Police Department issued a statement confirming that the chaotic incident remains under investigation. They indicated that further charges against individuals involved may be forthcoming as details continue to emerge.
