Matthew McConaughey and his mother, Kay McConaughey, have shared insights into their evolving relationship over the years. The renowned actor, his 93-year-old mother, and his 17-year-old son, Levi, are featured together in the upcoming Apple TV+ film The Lost Bus. During a recent group interview, they candidly discussed the dynamic of their family, particularly the challenges they faced during McConaughey’s rise to fame.
The 55-year-old Oscar winner reflected on a significant rift that emerged with his mother when she began sharing family stories with the media. He described the impact of this breach of trust during their Sunday phone calls, stating, “I’d have short conversations with her because of the information she was leaking.”
Matthew recalled moments when personal details he shared with Kay would make headlines shortly afterward, stating, “I’d tell her something on Sunday, and by Tuesday, it would be in the news. She couldn’t help herself.” This ongoing situation led to a considerable strain, prompting his mother to comment, “We were on a hiatus,” emphasizing the distance that developed between them.
After approximately eight years of tension, McConaughey found stability in his own fame and began to embrace the fact that his mother could express herself publicly. He stated, “I got stable enough… my mom can say whatever the hell she wants. It’s much more fun now.” Their ability to reconnect became a topic of discussion during a previous appearance on Red Table Talk in 2020.
McConaughey recalled the early days of his fame, starting with the breakthrough film A Time to Kill in 1996. He expressed frustration when he attempted to reach out to his mother, only to discover that a fan of his fame was responding instead. “Mother wasn’t answering the phone,” he shared, adding, “I was trying to find my own balance with fame. I would share things with her that would end up on television days later.”
This led to an adjustment in their communication. Matthew noted, “I was not able to talk to her as my mom for about eight years.” Furthermore, he explained, “Loose lips will sink ships. There are a lot of people that would like to know these things, and it’s none of their business.”
Over time, the bond between the two began to mend as McConaughey became more confident in his career. He reminisced about the moment they reconciled in 2004, saying, “My boat was built well enough where I didn’t feel like she could sink it.” Kay remarked that she may have enjoyed her son’s fame more than he did at times.
Kay McConaughey has not only raised Matthew but also his older brothers, Michael and Pat, alongside their father, James, who passed away in 1992. The couple endured a tumultuous relationship marked by three marriages and divorces, but ultimately they reconciled and remained together until James’s death.
Living in Austin, Texas, with her son’s family, Kay also discussed her parenting style. As a retired teacher, she emphasized the importance of discipline and clear communication, stating, “You don’t want me to have to tell you twice.” Matthew agreed, adding that their approach was strict but loving.
He acknowledged that his parenting style differs from his wife Camila Alves. They strive to understand their children more deeply, often engaging in conversations rather than sticking to “because I said so” explanations.
Levi, the couple’s eldest child, is making his acting debut in The Lost Bus, a film that recounts the real-life story of school bus driver Kevin McKay, who heroically rescued 22 students during the devastating 2018 Camp Fire in California. Levi plays the role of his father’s son in the film, while Kay portrays the mother of McConaughey’s character.
In a light-hearted moment, Levi shared his determination to audition for this role, revealing, “I had to badger him” to get his father’s approval. Matthew conveyed optimism about his son’s pursuit of a career in acting, stating he previously held a different view. “The first 15 years in Hollywood, I was like, ‘I’d never want my kid to grow up in the business,’” he confessed, later realizing the amazing experiences that came with it.
In his conversation with People magazine, Matthew expressed his desire to guide Levi through the complexities of the entertainment industry. He shared, “I’ve tried to give him some tips… It’s hard to keep your feet on the ground to sift out the real stuff from the BS.” This supportive approach reflects not only their personal growth but also the healing journey that has redefined their relationship.
As they prepare to embark on this new chapter together, McConaughey emphasizes the significance of identity beyond fame. He stated, “It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes.” As Matthew and Levi experience the challenges and triumphs of acting, their family bond continues to strengthen, built on mutual respect and understanding.
Looking back on their past, both Matthew and Kay McConaughey recognize the importance of growth and communication within their relationship. The journey they have taken, from estrangement to reconnection, underscores the resilience of familial bonds. As they stand together, not just as family but also as collaborators in a cinematic world, they celebrate their shared experiences, understanding that each moment has contributed to their story.
