In the vibrant border city of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, Mayor Juan Francisco Gim Nogales has openly commended President Donald Trump’s recent immigration policies. Set against the backdrop of artistic street murals and bustling markets, the mayor expressed his approval for what he describes as a significant shift in the United States’ approach to immigration.
Mayor Gim Nogales described the current immigration policy as a necessary ‘cleaning house’ effort. He highlighted that the changes implemented under Trump’s administration reflect a long-overdue reassessment of how the United States manages its immigration system. He told media outlets that the U.S. might be poised to recruit immigrants once the policies are firmly in place, indicating a potential restructuring of immigration practices.
Gim Nogales articulated a belief that Trump’s strategy is a break from the previous cycle of deportation and re-entry. He stated, “[Trump] had to break with the vicious cycle of deporting them, then they come back, and deporting them again. That cycle is over, and I see that as very good for the economy. This is why there are no mass deportations; he decided to act differently, and I think it is correct.” His perspective points towards a hopeful future where these policies could bolster economic stability in both the U.S. and Mexico.
When asked about the notable differences between Trump’s immigration policies and those of previous administrations, Mayor Gim Nogales referred to the logistical strategies employed by Trump’s team. The mayor mentioned that Trump’s administration has opted to transport migrants away from border towns, reducing traffic congestion while improving management of deported individuals. This approach comes as a response to the challenges faced by border cities like Nogales that often bear the burden of returning migrants.
“If you deport them here, out of every ten, seven try to cross again. That results in a cycle that was difficult to manage. The strategy implemented by President Trump—to fly migrants out further—is an effective solution to this.”
In discussing the local government’s readiness for the potential influx of deportees, Mayor Gim Nogales mentioned that they had braced themselves to receive between 2,000 to 3,000 migrants daily. However, the actual number after February 4 has averaged around 60 migrants per day, significantly lower than anticipated. He indicated that this disparity prompted the local government to rethink their resources and approach regarding migrant assistance.
Gim Nogales noted the importance of collaborative efforts with American authorities, specifically mentioning his city’s close partnership with Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). This collaboration aims to ensure a smoother transition for individuals returning to Mexico from the United States.
He stated, “We hold a monthly binational meeting that includes local authorities from both nations. This level of coordination enables us to create a shelter and a welcoming transition for those returning, helping them reintegrate into their communities back home.”
Since 2024, cross-border initiatives between Mexico and the United States, such as the ‘Se Busca Información’ program, aim to eliminate crime in border regions. This program targets criminal activities prevalent in Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora, which may contribute to safer community environments on both sides of the border.
The Local Repatriation Arrangement (LRA), established in 2016, remains active in Nogales. This agreement standardizes the procedures for safely returning Mexican nationals, further simplifying the repatriation process.
As Mayor Gim Nogales concluded his remarks, he emphasized the importance of transforming existing challenges into opportunities for growth. He stated, “We must work hand in hand as neighboring countries. These challenges must become areas of opportunity… Facing challenges can lead to beneficial outcomes.” By fostering collaboration and understanding, both nations can work towards mutual growth and stability.
