Elon Musk and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., both made gestures recently that attracted considerable media attention, but the coverage they received differed dramatically. A study by the Media Research Center highlights this discrepancy, raising questions about bias in media reporting.
In January, during a gathering at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., Musk performed a gesture perceived by many as a Nazi salute while celebrating President Donald Trump’s inauguration. He placed his hand over his heart before extending it toward the audience, a move that quickly drew criticism from liberal commentators.
Conversely, during the California Democratic Party’s convention this past Saturday, Booker made a similar motion after delivering a speech. He placed his right hand on his chest before raising it to acknowledge the crowd. However, this gesture received scant media coverage compared to Musk’s similar action.
Following Musk’s gesture, CNN, MSNBC, and PBS dedicated over 16 minutes to discussing the incident in the week that followed. This extensive coverage came during a time when Trump was making headlines with multiple executive orders and announcements. The outlets seized the opportunity to analyze and critique Musk’s actions extensively.
In stark contrast, Booker’s execution of a similar gesture went largely unnoticed. According to the Media Research Center, major networks including CNN, MSNBC, and PBS failed to cover Booker’s move at all.
Research analyst Bill D’Agostino, who conducted the study, emphasized the lengthy discourse surrounding Musk’s gesture. Reports indicated that commentators on left-leaning networks mentioned Musk’s salute a total of 55 times, with only 22 instances occurring in the initial week following the event.
The lengthy discussions about Musk included analyses questioning whether he was aligning with extremist ideologies. A notable segment featured MSNBC’s Ali Velshi, who devoted an episode to exploring whether Musk could be labeled as a crypto-Nazi, indicating the media’s continued scrutiny.
Reports suggest that journalists maintained a consistent effort to frame Musk’s gesture within a negative context. Comments from various outlets continually referred to it as a
