Meghan Markle’s family drama continues to trail her well after her royal departure. The Duchess of Sussex is embroiled in a legal battle with her estranged half-sister, Samantha Markle, over allegations of defamation made during interviews.
In 2022, Samantha Markle initiated legal proceedings against Meghan, claiming defamation arising from statements made during her highly publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. Though the case was initially dismissed in 2024, barring Samantha from re-filing the claims, an appeal is currently in progress. An oral argument has been scheduled for September 9 in Jacksonville, Florida.
According to royal expert Hilary Fordwich, the ongoing family rift threatens to undermine Meghan’s efforts to establish herself as a new figure in California society. She described Meghan’s attempts at rebranding as ‘California royalty’ as misguided in light of these continuing familial issues.
Fordwich stated, “Meghan Markle has done her utmost to rebrand herself as some sort of California royalty, in a desperate attempt to forge a new identity. However, this legal battle may thwart those efforts.”
Deep-rooted bitterness exists within Meghan’s family, particularly with her father, Thomas Markle, a former Hollywood lighting director. Fordwich noted that reconciliation with family members appears unlikely, exacerbating Meghan’s challenges in moving forward.
A spokesperson for Archewell, Meghan’s organization, has refrained from commenting on the ongoing legal dispute.
Peter Ticktin, Samantha’s attorney, recently informed the public about the status of the case. He emphasized that after both parties have submitted their arguments, the focus will shift to the questions posed by the three-judge panel at the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ticktin added, “The judges will determine whether the case should be reversed and remanded or if the lower court’s ruling will be upheld. Given this is a matter of law, there is a chance that the appeals court could overturn the trial court’s decision.”
Central to Samantha’s claims are Meghan’s comments during her 2021 interview, where she stated she grew up as an only child. Samantha contended that this statement was not only misleading but also defamatory. She argued it suggested a lack of closeness during their childhood, a point denied by Meghan. Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell ruled that Meghan’s statements fall under the category of protected opinion.
As royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams pointed out, the fractured relationships within Meghan’s family cast a long shadow, complicating her attempts to reinvent herself in business.
The media attention surrounding the affair has not diminished. Reports of family tensions and ongoing disputes only heighten public fascination. Meghan has been accused by both Samantha and Thomas of leaking stories to the British tabloids, prompting speculation about their motivations and family dynamics.
Ticktin elaborated on the legal nuances of the case. He indicated that determining whether false allegations relating to Samantha’s perceived involvement with racist groups could stand as defamation under Florida law will be key to the court’s decision.
Throughout her transition from royal to Californian celebrity, Meghan has simultaneously built her lifestyle brand, which aims to cultivate a personal identity separate from her royal background. She recently launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and kicked off the second season of her series,
