Melissa Gilbert Reflects on the Journey Behind Her Iconic Role in Little House on the Prairie

Melissa Gilbert stepped away from Hollywood’s glamor to take on the beloved role of Laura Ingalls in the classic television series Little House on the Prairie. Recently, the actress shared insights about her audition experience during her appearance on the podcast Hey Dude… The 90s Called!

The show, which captured the lives of a pioneer family, aired from 1974 to 1983, leaving an indelible mark on television history.

An Unconventional Audition Attire

Reflecting on her audition days, Gilbert recalled, “I would change into my audition uniform, which was just overalls, a flannel shirt, and tennis shoes.” At that time, the 61-year-old had a unique approach to preparing for her auditions. Rather than going for a polished and sophisticated look, she intentionally allowed any dirt on her face or unkempt hair to remain, accentuating her authenticity.

“My mom would throw my hair into pigtails,” she explained. “Then, I’d just sit on the floor and do my homework until they called me in.” This candid preparation stood out in stark contrast to the other girls, who arrived with their mothers, meticulously styled and well-groomed for the audition.

Standing Out in a Competitive Field

As Gilbert entered the audition room filled with girls dressed to impress, her raggedy appearance set her apart. “I came in all raggedy and dirty and messy,” she noted. This unconventional approach evidently paid off, as she was later informed that she landed the role by none other than Michael Landon’s daughter, Leslie.
