EXCLUSIVE: A Republican representative from the Memphis area is advocating for a lasting federal law enforcement presence in Tennessee’s largest city following an executive order aimed at reducing crime by President Donald Trump.
Representative David Kustoff, a member of Congress from Tennessee, represents the suburbs surrounding Memphis and rural areas further afield. He recently participated in activities associated with Trump’s newly established Memphis Safe Task Force.

State crime statistics indicate that the Memphis Police Department documented a staggering 250 homicides, 753 cases of rape, and over 12,800 aggravated assaults throughout 2024.
“I have spent my entire life in Memphis. I am speaking to you right now from within the city limits. This is a good community,” Kustoff remarked. “While there are many outstanding individuals here, we have faced high crime rates, particularly violent crime, which intensified during the Biden administration.”
There was a significant increase in crime figures across the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic and the early months of President Biden’s administration.
Despite criticism of Trump’s strategy to deploy federal forces to cities confronting crime, Kustoff noted that residents in Memphis largely welcome the increased law enforcement presence.
“Feedback from community members indicates that they appreciate the law enforcement and National Guard presence. We heard this prior to their deployment, and now the sentiment is even more pronounced,” Kustoff said.
He continued, “The agents and the National Guardsmen on the ground report receiving thanks and expressions of gratitude from various residents. This appreciation reflects the spirit of Memphis, the South, and Tennessee as a whole.”
Since the task force’s initiation, Kustoff shared that authorities have successfully located 45 missing children and made over 900 arrests. These accomplishments underscore the effectiveness of the operation.
