Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, engaged in an impressive nearly 24-hour speech that commenced at 6:23 p.m. on Tuesday. He concluded his remarks the following day at 5:00 p.m. During his address, Merkley articulated serious concerns about what he characterized as rising authoritarianism linked to the Trump administration.
“We should be aware and concerned about the possibility of emergency powers being used to expand authoritarian control. This is the current reality in America. We face authoritarianism, a Congress that often merely rubber-stamps presidential actions, and a judiciary increasingly granting power to the executive branch,” Merkley asserted.
Lawmakers Face Stalemate Over Funding
The backdrop of this speech features an ongoing stalemate in Congress regarding federal funding for 2026. While Republicans in the House of Representatives passed a temporary funding bill to keep the government operational until November 21, Senate Democrats have repeatedly defeated this package.
The Senate again failed to advance the funding measure on Wednesday, resulting in a 54-46 vote against it.
