The family of former U.S. Representative Mia Love is prioritizing quality time as they face a heartbreaking reality. After her battle with GBM brain cancer, her treatment is no longer effective, as her daughter Abigale stated on Saturday.
In a heartfelt message on her mother’s social media account, Abigale shared, “Hello Friends, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer.” She went on to reveal the grim update, noting the cancer’s resistance to treatment and stressing that the family has turned its attention towards making the most of their remaining moments together.
Love’s diagnosis of glioblastoma came in 2022, a revelation she publicly shared in August 2023. This aggressive form of brain cancer has profoundly impacted her life and her family’s perspective on their time together.
Mia Love achieved significant milestones during her political career. In 2014, she made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, representing a redrawn district near Salt Lake City that was previously held by a Democrat. Furthermore, she was the first Black Congress member from Utah.
Reflecting on her election in 2013, Love stated, “I wasn’t elected in Saratoga Springs because of my race or my gender or my heels. I was elected by the people there because I had a plan and a vision to get us financially stable.” Her commitment to her constituents clearly resonated with voters.
During her two terms in Congress, Love served on the Financial Services Committee. Notably, she stood out as the only Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus, paving the way for a diverse political landscape.
However, her political journey faced challenges. In 2018, she was defeated by a Democrat in a highly publicized election, marking a significant moment in her career.
Love last updated her supporters about her health in May, expressing her resilience despite the hardship. She wrote, “These past few years have not been easy, but I have found strength and solace in my faith and constant support and love in my family. Together, they have given me hope! Whatever challenges you are facing now, keep fighting and know that there is hope.” Her words reflect a spirit of perseverance that has inspired many.
Love recounted her health struggles to a church youth group earlier this year. She described how headaches became increasingly severe during a 2022 vacation, leading to a hospital visit where doctors discovered a tumor. Following surgery to remove 95% of the tumor, it was confirmed as malignant.
In response to her diagnosis, Love underwent a rigorous treatment plan, which included chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Through it all, she maintained a commitment to her faith, seeking solace in both spirituality and medical science.
The battle against glioblastoma has challenged many, including high-profile figures like the late Senator John McCain, who was also diagnosed with this aggressive cancer in 2017. Love’s journey reflects the broader struggle faced by those grappling with this devastating disease.
In 2023, despite her health issues, Love remained politically engaged. She condemned an assassination attempt on President Trump, stating, “Political violence is despicable. There is not, nor will there ever be, a place for it in our Republic.” Her call for civility and discourse resonated with many across the political spectrum.
Following Abigale’s announcement regarding her mother’s health, an outpouring of support flooded in from various political figures and community members. Senator Mike Lee expressed solidarity, saying, “Mia Love is a dear friend. I pray for her and her family.” Governor Spencer Cox reflected on Love’s integrity and strength, stating, “Our hearts are with Mia and her family during this difficult time. Utah stands with you.”
Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger also conveyed his condolences, expressing sorrow for the family. This support underscores the impact Mia Love has had beyond her political career.
As Mia Love and her family face this challenging chapter, they embody a message of resilience, love, and acceptance. The fight against cancer is a collective one that calls for support and understanding from friends and the community alike.
In the face of adversity, Mia Love continues to inspire not only through her political legacy but also her personal strength in dealing with profound challenges. Her story is a poignant reminder of the importance of family, friendship, and the moments we cherish.
