No NFL player aspires to lose their starting role, particularly franchise quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons. As Cousins grappled with this reality prior to Week 15 of the season, head coach Raheem Morris made a pivotal decision. He announced that Michael Penix Jr. would take over as the starting quarterback, intensifying the stakes in the division title race.
Cousins faced challenges despite a recent victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Prior to that win, a disheartening four-game losing streak had put Atlanta below .500. In his first career start, Penix faced the formidable New York Giants, seeking to reverse the team’s fortunes.
During an interview with Fox News Digital on Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Penix elaborated on the invaluable advice he received from Cousins. Having observed and studied Cousins throughout the season, Penix noted, “Just let the game come to you and be patient.”
Penix emphasized the importance of not forcing big plays. “Even if you call a shot play, or a big play, you don’t have to take the big play if it’s not there,” he explained. The insights from Cousins, particularly in tackling game progression and reading defenses, greatly assisted Penix as he adapted to the rigor of NFL gameplay.
While Penix did not achieve a touchdown pass in his initial start, he demonstrated competence with an 18-for-27 performance, totaling 202 passing yards, although he did throw one interception. Supported by a resilient defense that scored two touchdowns against the struggling Giants, the Falcons sealed a decisive 34-7 victory, improving their season record to 8-7.
Despite the anticipation of his first start, Penix felt calm, attributing his composure to previous game experiences and preseason play. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that nothing truly prepares a player for the magnitude of an inaugural start, except a mindset geared toward readiness.
