Michigan Author Triumphs Over Odds, Raises $500K for Children’s Charities through Faith and Resilience

JT Mestdagh, born with the rare and life-threatening VATER syndrome, is a testament to perseverance and philanthropic spirit. Despite enduring 16 surgeries by age 16 and grappling with the challenges of severe dyslexia, he approaches life with a positive outlook and a dedication to helping others.

Recently, Mestdagh, a Michigan native, unveiled his book titled “No Bad Days.” This work shares inspiring anecdotes from his life and the lives of others, aiming to motivate young readers aged 13 to 19 to overcome adversity. Through his stories, he offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of unexpected life challenges.

“Through storytelling, I’ve been able to cope with my challenges,” Mestdagh told Fox News Digital. “Sharing my journey allows my peers to understand what I am experiencing, and it encourages them to express their own experiences.”

A Journey of Resilience

Mestdagh’s challenges began at birth and continued throughout his youth. He faced significant medical hurdles, including spinal cord surgery during middle school, which resulted in persistent discomfort and mobility issues.

His parents went to great lengths to provide the best care possible, traveling from Detroit to Cincinnati and Denver for necessary procedures. Mestdagh reflects on this journey positively, stating, “It’s been a little bit of a project in my life, but it’s been an amazing journey that I’ve learned so much from. I don’t know anything else, and I maintain a positive outlook on life.”

Philanthropy as a Mission

While facing his own adversities, Mestdagh has committed himself to philanthropy. He established the JT Mestdagh Foundation during his senior year of college. The foundation focuses on assisting sick children diagnosed with colorectal issues and disabilities by providing essential medical supplies such as drip bags, syringes, and solutions for their care.

“The insurance companies don’t see a need to cover it,” he remarked, emphasizing the gaps in medical support many families face. Recently, he raised over $500,000 for children’s charities, aiming to ease the burden on families dealing with their children’s serious health issues.

Creating a Supportive Network

With the foundation’s help, Mestdagh collaborates with medical professionals to identify families in need. He offers financial support for hospital stays, providing peace and stability during difficult times.

Additionally, his organization works with the Ronald McDonald House, enhancing the Tattum Reading Program for children struggling with learning disabilities. Mestdagh shares, “The Tattum program really inspired me to read. For someone with colorectal issues, reading challenges are significant, and having support is crucial.”

The Role of Faith and Community

Mestdagh credits much of his strength to the support from his family and his community, affectionately called his
