Lindsey Lemke Hull, their daughter, described the dire conditions of the prison where her parents are being held. She noted, “She doesn’t have anything. You don’t even get toilet paper in these places. It’s just a very, very scary environment.” Hull emphasized her growing fears for her parents’ safety, stating they remain unaware of how their ordeal will unfold.

Details of the Arrest

On March 4, as they arrived at Isla Mujeres, Mexican authorities detained the Akeos, accusing them of fraud related to disputed credit card charges from a timeshare purchase made in 2021. The claim has sparked widespread disbelief among their family members, especially considering Paul Akeo’s background as a 21-year Navy veteran and Michigan State Police employee.

Since the arrest, communication has been limited. The children of the Akeos have only been able to speak with their mother briefly, while Paul has not been heard from at all. Their attorney, John Manly, expressed deep concern, calling Paul a political prisoner targeted due to his military service.

The Timeshare Dispute

The couple purchased a timeshare through Palace Elite Resorts for a significant sum, promising exclusive benefits at their properties in Mexico. However, like many families, they encountered issues with the services promised versus what was actually delivered.

In June 2022, Paul filed a complaint with American Express based on the alleged breach of contract. After investigation, American Express sided with the Akeos and arranged for a chargeback exceeding $116,000 in September 2022.

With a new understanding of the situation, Lindsey Hull explained, “My parents even hired a timeshare lawyer to ensure they followed the correct processes. We thought this situation was resolved.” Unfortunately, it appears that was not the case.

While the Akeos assert they acted within their rights, Palace Elite contends the couple defrauded them out of over $100,000 by reversing charges for services rendered. Mexican authorities allege that the Akeos engaged in fraudulent activity after signing their timeshare contracts.

According to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office of Quintana Roo, the Akeos cancelled 13 transactions with total charges amounting to over 2.4 million pesos. They claim these actions were unwarranted as they were negotiating legitimate grievances with Palace Elite.

In addition to financial restitution, Palace Resorts is alleged to have sought the closure of a private Facebook group moderated by Christy Akeo, as well as a public apology for negative comments about the company.
