MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Representative Mikie Sherrill has emerged victorious in New Jersey’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, as announced by the Associated Press on Tuesday night.
Sherrill’s win positions her for a competitive showdown against former GOP state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli, a three-time gubernatorial candidate. This election is poised to fill the vacancy left by term-limited Democrat Governor Phil Murphy.
In a crowded field of Democratic candidates, Sherrill gained a decisive edge, surpassing prominent figures such as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, former New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, and fellow U.S. Representative Josh Gottheimer.
Throughout the campaign trail, candidates from both major parties invoked the name of Donald Trump. Democrats highlighted their commitment to being the most vocal opponents of Trump’s policies, while Republicans sought to align themselves with the former president’s agenda. Notably, Ciattarelli received Trump’s endorsement, positioning him as a prominent voice for Republican ideals in New Jersey.
The New Jersey gubernatorial race joins Virginia’s election in 2025 as one of the few opportunities to assess public sentiment toward Trump’s influence ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Both races will serve as critical barometers for political analysts and policymakers.
As they campaigned, the Democratic candidates navigated a complex landscape. Balancing the desire to build on Governor Murphy’s legacy while promising to reform the status quo proved to be a challenging endeavor. Many candidates rejected Trump’s executive actions, particularly his stance on immigration and cuts to federal programs.
Democratic governors have frequently positioned themselves as defenders against Trump’s federal policies. They have resisted his directives, such as by suing the administration to ensure access to federal funding and avoiding compliance with ICE’s immigration enforcement practices.
During the primary election coverage, Sherrill and Gottheimer faced probing inquiries from the press regarding the ongoing protests and unrest in Los Angeles. When asked how she would address the situation differently than California Governor Gavin Newsom, Sherrill emphasized her extensive military and law enforcement background.
She expressed her commitment to ensuring safety within the state, stating her intention to advocate for a peaceful and secure environment while critiquing Trump’s approach as exacerbating tensions nationwide.
Sherrill’s credentials as a U.S. Navy veteran and her experience working in the U.S. Attorney’s Office as an outreach and re-entry coordinator highlight her qualifications for public service. She detailed her role in prosecuting federal cases and collaborating with law enforcement to enhance community safety.
In a recent statement, Sherrill criticized President Trump’s management of the National Guard deployment, remarking on the implications of sending military support to California without the governor’s request. She labeled this as an instance of
