Mikie Sherrill Secures New Jersey Governorship in Landmark Victory for Democrats

In a pivotal election, Democrat Mikie Sherrill outperformed Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey gubernatorial race. Sherrill’s victory was underpinned by substantial backing from Black voters, women, and younger demographics. Her triumph marks the Democrats’ third consecutive term in the governor’s office, a significant achievement not witnessed since 1961. This outcome underscores the state’s continued preference for Democratic leadership amid a backdrop of recent Republican advances.

Sherrill’s Electoral Coalition: A Winning Strategy

Preliminary findings from the Fox News Voter Poll, surveying over 4,400 registered New Jersey voters, reveal Sherrill’s strong performance among key voter groups. This includes impressive support from Black voters, those under 30, women, and college graduates.

Notably, a striking 20-point gender gap emerged. Approximately 60 percent of women aligned their votes with Sherrill, while around 50 percent of men favored Ciattarelli. Sherrill’s appeal among women was evident across all age segments, particularly resonating with younger women.

While Republicans previously gained traction among young male voters, this election saw younger men in New Jersey favoring the Democrat.

Parental Votes Reveal a Gender Divide

The gender split extended into parental demographics, with mothers supporting Sherrill nearly two to one. In contrast, fathers leaned towards Ciattarelli by a little over 10 points.

A critical element of Sherrill’s success lay in her multiracial coalition, which garnered over 90 percent of Black voters and around 70 percent of Hispanic voters. This significant support suggests that the Hispanic community did not align with Republican candidates as anticipated.

Demographic Insights: Voter Behavior and Preferences

Despite a broader trend of White voters siding with Ciattarelli, driven largely by a 20-point advantage among White men, White women displayed a more balanced voting pattern, marginally favoring Sherrill.

Furthermore, the majority of college-educated voters cast their ballots for Sherrill. In contrast, individuals without a college degree leaned slightly towards Ciattarelli, who demonstrated significant support among White men lacking a college education by over 40 points.

Both candidates succeeded in rallying substantial support from their party bases, with over 90 percent of voters within each party backing their respective candidates. In the crucial independent voter demographic, Sherrill managed to secure the approval of just over half. Additionally, support from six out of ten self-identified moderates assisted her campaign in achieving statewide success.

Trump’s Influence Persists Despite Absence

The lingering influence of former President Trump remained significant, even with his absence from the ballot. Approximately 70 percent of Sherrill supporters expressed their vote as a repudiation of Trump’s administration, whereas about one-quarter of Ciattarelli’s backers aimed to support the former president.

Polling data shows Trump’s approval rating among New Jersey voters has declined, with more than half disapproving of his performance. While public opinion remains divided regarding the Democratic Party, perspectives on the Republican Party lean towards the unfavorable.

Key Issues Shaping Voter Decisions

Voter concerns predominantly revolved around economic issues, with affordability ranking as a paramount concern. Taxes emerged as the most pressing issue, closely followed by economic stability. Voters prioritizing tax issues appeared to lean toward Ciattarelli by a margin exceeding 20 percentage points, whereas supporters concerned about the economy tended to favor Sherrill, albeit within a narrower margin.

Healthcare also played a critical role, as Sherrill received considerable backing from voters who identified it as a top priority. Nearly all surveyed voters acknowledged property taxes as at least a minor problem, with seven out of ten labeling it as a major concern. Additionally, rising electricity costs significantly impacted the electorate, with approximately 90 percent of voters reporting it as a problem.

Voter Sentiment Towards Economic Stability

The increasing burden of property taxes and electricity costs fostered a more pessimistic outlook on the state’s economy. About 60 percent of voters with a negative sentiment backed Ciattarelli, while three-quarters of those with a positive perspective supported Sherrill.

When examining personal financial situations, one in four New Jersey voters reported falling behind economically. Meanwhile, 60 percent stated they were holding steady, and only a small fraction believed they were progressing financially. Among those experiencing financial struggles, Sherrill managed to attract the majority of votes, while those maintaining their financial status split their support more evenly between candidates.

Exploring the Voter Motivations

Responses to immigration enforcement revealed mixed sentiments among voters regarding cooperation with the Trump administration. Over half of the electorate indicated they believed the administration had overreached, while about 30 percent stated they felt the measures were appropriate.

Voters expressed the importance of candidates sharing their values and advocating for necessary change. Those motivated by change primarily supported Ciattarelli, while voters prioritizing shared values and community engagement overwhelmingly favored Sherrill.

Sherrill’s Campaign Strategies

Despite challenges arising from accusations regarding her Naval Academy graduation, Sherrill maintained strong voter support. Moreover, voters prioritizing honesty preferred her by more than 40 points. A majority of Garden State voters rated her campaign as fairer than Ciattarelli’s, which likely contributed to her favorable net ratings.

Political corruption emerged as a significant concern among New Jersey voters, with nine out of ten identifying it as at least a minor issue. Those perceiving it as a major problem tended to favor Ciattarelli, while those downplaying its severity aligned with Sherrill.

Final Thoughts on Sherrill’s Victory

As the dust settles from this fiercely contested race, it becomes evident that motivations for voting diverged significantly between supporters of both candidates. Two-thirds of Sherrill’s voters reported their choice as a positive affirmation of her candidacy, whereas 80 percent of Ciattarelli’s supporters emphasized their vote as a support for him rather than a rejection of Sherrill.

Sherrill received strong backing from late-deciding voters, with nearly 70 percent opting for her in the final moments of the campaign. With term-limited Governor Phil Murphy’s approval ratings struggling ahead of his exit, the future landscape of New Jersey politics remains poised for examination.

METHODOLOGY

The Fox News Voter Poll results derive from SSRS surveys conducted with New Jersey registered voters from October 22 to November 4, 2025, culminating at the end of Election Day. The findings consist of data collected from registered voters via online platforms and telephone interviews, alongside in-person polling from 30 precincts statewide. Weight adjustments are applied to align the sample with the overall demographic composition of the state’s electorate. The margin of sampling error for the overall sample of more than 4,400 New Jersey voters stands at plus or minus 2.1 percentage points, with a larger error margin for specific subgroups.
