A Distinguished Background
Sherrill is not only a politician but also a Naval Academy graduate who served as a Sea King helicopter pilot for over nine years. Leaving the military in 2003 as a lieutenant, she transitioned to law, obtaining her degree from Georgetown University. Sherrill worked in a New York City law firm and later joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey as a federal prosecutor in 2015 before entering into politics.
She announced her gubernatorial candidacy in November 2024, donning a Navy jacket to signify her readiness to focus on New Jersey’s future.
A Tough Race Against Ciattarelli
After maneuvering through a competitive Democratic primary in June, Sherrill faced Ciattarelli in the general election. Before entering politics, Ciattarelli was a certified public accountant and owned a medical publishing company. He initially ran for governor in 2017 and finished second in the GOP primary. Four years later, after clinching the GOP nomination, he came within three points of defeating Murphy.
As the campaign progressed, Ciattarelli improved his polling numbers and narrowed the gap. However, despite his efforts, he was unable to flip New Jersey, a state that leans toward the blue by a significant margin.

Recent trends indicated a potential Republican resurgence, particularly following Trump’s improved performance in the state during the 2024 election, where he decreased his loss margin from 16 points in 2020 to just six.

In September, a report revealed that the Naval Academy had blocked Sherrill from graduating due to a cheating scandal. Sherrill responded vehemently, stating that she refused to name classmates involved in the scandal, leading to her exclusion from the ceremony.
