The Minneapolis mayoral election will transition to ranked choice voting after no candidate secured at least 50% of the votes in the recent election, according to reports from the Associated Press.
In Minneapolis, voters have the option to rank up to three candidates in municipal races. This year’s mayoral contest featured an extensive field of over a dozen candidates. By 10:41 p.m. EST on election night, Jacob Frey and Omar Fateh emerged as the frontrunners with the highest number of first-choice votes.
Fateh’s campaign garnered significant attention nationwide, drawing parallels with Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral bid in New York City. The Minnesota Star Tribune referred to him as the ‘Mamdani of Minneapolis,’ highlighting his growing political influence.
At just 35 years old, Fateh, the son of Somali immigrants, made history in 2020 by becoming the first Somali-American elected to the Minnesota State Senate. This year, he launched a bold challenge against the incumbent Frey, criticizing him for failing to adequately address the needs of a diverse and evolving community.
Fateh received support from the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, marking the first endorsement of a Minneapolis mayoral candidate in 16 years. However, the party’s chairman, Chirard Carlbom, retracted that endorsement mere weeks later.
Despite setbacks, Fateh declared on social media, “I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor. This endorsement is a message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It’s a mandate to build a city that works for all of us,” after receiving the endorsement.
Following the retraction, Carlbom stated that the Constitution, Bylaws and Rules Committee found substantial failures in the voting process that led to a candidate being mistakenly eliminated from contention. This decision initiated a controversy over the endorsement process.
Fateh’s progressive platform maintained strong support thanks in part to endorsements from the Twin Cities chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and support from Rep. Ilhan Omar, a prominent figure representing Minneapolis in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The electorate faced 15 candidates on the ballot due to the absence of a primary election. While candidates can express political affiliations, Minneapolis municipal races are officially nonpartisan.
Fateh called for his supporters to rank pastor DeWayne Davis and attorney Jazz Hampton as their second and third choices to consolidate opposition against Frey, who had established a solid reputation as the incumbent.
In Minneapolis, a candidate must receive more than 50% of first-choice votes to claim victory outright. In cases where no candidate achieves a majority, the counting process advances to additional rounds.
During these rounds, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated, and voters’ ballots are reassigned to their next preferred choice. This cycle continues until a candidate secures the necessary majority to be declared the winner.
The Associated Press reported that every mayoral election in Minneapolis since 2013 has entered at least a second round of ranked-choice voting, showcasing the typical competitiveness of these races.
In 2017, Frey ousted an incumbent after undergoing six rounds of tabulation. Furthermore, in 2021, he successfully won re-election following two rounds.
The mayor’s previous election received national attention, largely due to the tragic murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. This incident sparked widespread protests against police brutality, drawing national and international condemnation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, Governor Tim Walz, who once served as then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, both D-Minn., endorsed Frey’s campaign. Their support underscores the significance of the upcoming election in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis continues to grapple with its complex socio-political challenges, exemplified by a recent tragic incident during a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church in August, where two children lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries in a shooting.
This mayoral race will undoubtedly shape the future of Minneapolis, as candidates endeavor to address pressing concerns in a city fueled by differing ideologies and community priorities.
As the ranked choice voting process unfolds, it remains critical to examine how these candidates will navigate the complexities of urban governance and community relations moving forward.
