Minnesota Attorney General Faces Lawsuit Over Inclusion of Transgender Athletes in Girls Sports

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is under fire due to a lawsuit challenging the state’s policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls sports. Beecher emphasizes that the existing policy violates Title IX, the federal law mandating gender equality in educational programs and activities. She further states, “Our client, Female Athletes United, is right to challenge the state’s discriminatory policy and fight for true equality in sports.”

The defendants in this case include Ellison, Erich Martens, Executive Director of the Minnesota State High School League, Rebecca Lucero, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, and Willie Jett, the Minnesota Commissioner of Education.

In response to the lawsuit, Ellison released a statement underscoring the importance of sports for young people. He said, “Sports provide countless benefits, including exercise, the thrill of competition, and the formation of lifelong friendships. It is unjust to exclude any group of students who already face higher rates of bullying and discrimination. I will continue to advocate for the rights of all students to partake in sports alongside their peers.”

It announced plans to continue allowing transgender athletes to compete, directly challenging federal directives.

Ellison claimed in a press conference that the Department of Justice communicated intentions to pursue legal action against Minnesota if it failed to comply with the executive order. In defiance, he opted to file a preemptive lawsuit, stating, “I won’t sit by while the Trump administration threatens Minnesota. Today, we are taking a stand against bullying on behalf of vulnerable children merely trying to lead healthy lives.”

The White House has criticized Ellison’s actions, with spokesperson Harrison Fields expressing concern. Fields described the lawsuit as disturbing, saying, “Why would a grown man sue the Trump administration to allow biological males to participate in women’s sports? This action appears to undermine women’s rights and is utterly inappropriate.”

Simultaneously, Minnesota’s legislative body has grappled with the proposed “Preserving Girls’ Sports Act.” This legislation, which failed to pass in early March, aimed to restrict participation in female-designated sports to biological females only.
