Minnesota Vikings Legend Adam Thielen Waived as He Seeks New Opportunity

Adam Thielen is officially no longer a member of the Minnesota Vikings. The beloved wide receiver’s journey with the team came to an end on Monday after he requested to explore opportunities to compete with another franchise before concluding his NFL career.

The announcement was made by the Vikings and Thielen via social media, with the 35-year-old athlete confirming this will be his final season in the league.

As the Vikings struggle with a disappointing 4-8 record and slim playoff chances, Thielen expressed his desire to join a team that needs receiver support for a shot at a Super Bowl.

In Thielen’s heartfelt statement, he shared the emotional weight of this decision. He remarked on the profound connection he feels to Minnesota, stating, “This is tremendously difficult for me to write and certainly not how any of us imagine this to go. As a Minnesota native, putting on this uniform over the years and representing this community both on and off the field has always meant that much more to me. This team is in my bones, it’s in my heart and it’s part of my DNA. I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking.”

Recognizing that this would be his last season, Thielen appreciated the Vikings for allowing him to seek opportunities elsewhere as he wraps up his football journey.

Thielen’s career path began in 2014 when he joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent from Minnesota State. His local roots made playing for the team particularly special, which adds to the difficulty of parting ways.

After overcoming the odds, Thielen developed into one of the Vikings’ top pass-catching options. He had a standout season in 2016, achieving 967 receiving yards with five touchdowns on 69 receptions. His consistent performance earned him back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2017 and 2018, with his peak year coming in 2018 when he tallied 1,373 yards and nine touchdowns.

As the Vikings drafted standout wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Thielen transitioned into a supporting role but remained a crucial component of the team’s offensive strategy. Despite changes in the roster, including a lack of steady quarterback play with the likes of J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer, Thielen’s experience and skills were invaluable.

In 2023, Thielen ventured to the Carolina Panthers after spending nine seasons with the Vikings. Although the Panthers were amidst a rebuilding phase, he managed to record an impressive 1,014 yards and four touchdowns during his first season. However, 2024 saw Thielen experience a lighter workload, participating in only 10 games before returning to the Vikings for his 12th season.

With an already competitive receiving corps that includes Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor, and T.J. Hockenson, Thielen found himself in more of a depth role this season.

Looking ahead, there is uncertainty around Thielen’s next destination in the NFL. However, he is available to other teams after clearing waivers, and he remains hopeful about continuing his professional career.

Despite his departure, Thielen assured Vikings fans that he intends to return for a proper farewell. He expressed deep gratitude towards the organization and its leadership, stating, “Minnesota will always be our home and we are incredibly grateful to the Wilf family, [general manager] Kwesi [Adofo-Mensah], KO [head coach Kevin O’Connell], [executive vice president] Rob [Brzezinski] and everyone in the Vikings organization for bringing us back in August. This organization means the world to us from the top down and this locker room is filled with true professionals. With gratitude and love, I’ll be back to retire!”

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah echoed sentiments of respect and admiration for Thielen, sharing a statement through the team’s social media channels. He acknowledged Thielen’s outstanding contributions, stating, “Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere. Adam is one of the all-time great Vikings, and we wish him and his family continued success.”

The Vikings community eagerly awaits the next chapter in Thielen’s story, reflecting on his remarkable journey with the team and leaving the door open for a heartfelt return.
