Miss Israel Melanie Shiraz has reported receiving numerous death and rape threats after a controversial video surfaced, allegedly showing her giving a disparaging look to Miss Palestine during the Miss Universe competition held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The moment ignited a firestorm on social media, attracting a wave of hateful comments and threatening messages targeted at the 27-year-old contestant. Shiraz revealed that the flow of vitriol began just hours after the edited video gained traction online, leading viewers to wrongly interpret her gaze toward Nadeen Ayoub as a dirty look.
Shiraz expressed her uncertainty regarding the authenticity of the video, acknowledging its possibility of being manipulated. She stated, “I don’t know if that footage was edited or not, but it was definitely at least edited and cropped and clipped together in a way that made it look like I was the only one that was looking that way.”
Upon viewing the clip, Shiraz initially believed it might have been altered using artificial intelligence before realizing it was merely a distortion from an alternate camera angle.
Addressing the harsh realities she faces, the Miss Israel contestant remarked on the level of hostility directed towards her, saying, “I expected to receive a lot of hate and heightened scrutiny just for being the representative from Israel, but this should not cause Hitler comments and not cause death threats.”
However, she has indeed received alarming messages such as, “I want to rape and kill you” and other graphic threats that deeply disturb her.
In her own words, she recounted the chilling statements she’s received, such as, “die you dirty Jew.” She emphasized her reluctance to share explicit details, yet she described the threats as profoundly jarring.
Hoping to bridge gaps and foster dialogue, Shiraz added, “I was hoping that I would be able to have a productive dialogue with Miss Palestine, maybe even take some photos together to show the world that we can be an example for peace.”
Shiraz is no stranger to hard work and ambition. Having studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and completing her MBA, she has also made a mark in Israel’s tech sector, even founding her own startup before entering the world of pageantry.
Reflecting on her journey, Shiraz stated, “I realized that I am very passionate about advocacy. I got heavily involved in the Jewish community and Israel advocacy on campus, recognizing that a cultural stage like this could give Israel a human voice, particularly when the nation is often perceived through a political lens.”
During the Miss Universe competition, a specific cameraman focused solely on Ayoub, with Shiraz positioned directly behind her. Shiraz noticed the cameraman’s preferential treatment towards Ayoub, which contributed to the controversial video outcome.
Despite the uproar, Ayoub shared several images from the event on social media, some of which included Shiraz. Upon noticing the unflattering photos, Shiraz requested Ayoub to remove them; however, only a handful were taken down.
Despite facing relentless abuse online, Shiraz remains resolute in her goal of representing Israel. She shared, “It is very, very tough to be Jewish and Israeli in this day and age. No matter what we do, we will receive hate for it.”
Yet, Shiraz emphasizes that this adversity only strengthens her resolve. “It reinforces that what I’m doing right now is essential, and that I shouldn’t lose focus but instead stay motivated.”
The 74th Miss Universe competition features 121 contestants and continues its journey in Thailand, with the grand final set for November 21. Shiraz remains passionate about her representation of Israel and aspires to pivot her background toward advocacy for positive causes post-competition.
In her concluding remarks, she stated, “I come out and put my best foot forward every day, and sometimes it feels like, no matter what I do, it’s just not sufficient to earn support from certain individuals. But that will not deter me from my mission to impact positive change.”
Fox News Digital has reached out to Miss Palestine for comment regarding this incident, as discussions surrounding cultural and national representation continue to evolve in complex ways within pageantry.
