A Mississippi artist, with a following surpassing a million, gained viral attention for his heartfelt portrait of Charlie Kirk, showcased during a memorial event that reached millions.
Samuel Ingram, popularly known as Sam Ryan on social media, created an evocative image of Kirk with his hands pressed together, suggesting prayer or deep reflection. As the founder of Sam Ryan Studios, Ryan’s portrait captures a serious and contemplative expression, utilizing a bold palette of reds, blacks, whites, and blues that evoke strong patriotic sentiments.
In an interview with Fox News Digital on the Sunday preceding Kirk’s 32nd birthday, Ryan recalled a personal meeting with Kirk from the previous year. At that time, Ryan’s painting of President Donald Trump, following an assassination attempt, was gaining traction. Kirk, impressed by the piece, reached out to express his desire to acquire a print.
“His direct message said, ‘I love it, man. I need to get this for the studio. When are you doing a print of it?’” Ryan remembered. Unfortunately, that was the last contact they shared.
Following Kirk’s tragic assassination on September 10, Ryan felt an overwhelming need to honor his memory. “I wanted to do him a service,” he said. “The best way I could was to create a memorial that everyone could see, contributing to his legacy, especially using a reference photo from Dan Fleuette of Charlie in prayer.”
Ryan dedicated about 12 hours overnight to complete the portrait and unveiled it at 8 a.m. on September 11, immediately following a sleepless night. “This was my way to show respect for him and his family,” he shared.
Despite the well-intentioned tribute, Ryan encountered significant pushback. He reported losing approximately 44,000 followers on Instagram alone, alongside a collective decline of over 100,000 across all his social platforms, including Facebook and TikTok. Even now, weeks after Kirk’s death, Ryan continues to receive death threats via Instagram.
“All for painting someone I had a personal connection with,” stated Ryan. “It wasn’t a political statement, although I am conservative.” He emphasized that his tribute was a personal expression aimed at honoring Kirk and providing solace to his family.
Fortunately, the support Ryan received greatly outweighed the negativity. His artistic tribute attracted a new wave of supportive followers, with his count surpassing one million across various platforms. “I gained over a million total followers… a couple hundred thousand per platform,” he noted proudly.
Ryan traveled from Mississippi to Arizona to attend Kirk’s memorial service on September 21. He described that event as bittersweet, marking a significant career milestone overshadowed by tragic circumstances.
Ryan’s reflections on Kirk’s death resonate deeply, comparing it to historical events of persecution for truth-tellers. “Often, people don’t want to hear the truth; they seek comfort instead,” he explained. “Kirk challenged many hidden evils, and it seems that those forces worked against him.”
He remarked, “Jesus had only twelve disciples to spread His message, but Charlie had far more helping to disseminate the word. With so much attention, it’s inevitable to attract the ire of those opposed to the message.”
The faith-driven artist expressed hope that those who unfollowed him might regain perspective on Kirk as a human being beyond the political lens. “He did not deserve the backlash,” Ryan insisted. “To my knowledge, he never expressed anything hateful or racist.”
Ryan articulated his desire for unfollowers to understand Kirk’s humanity. “I have a heart, which seems to be lacking in some people who struggle to set aside their political biases,” he added.
Ryan announced that the painting will be prominently displayed at Turning Point USA’s headquarters. Due to heightened interest, he will be selling limited-edition prints that he personally signed from October 17 to 19 through his website.
“There is a waitlist of about 20,000 people already, and we’ll have a limited number of prints available,” he explained. “Sales will be first come, first served.”
Guided by his faith, Ryan aims for his artwork to inspire others towards goodness and faith. “Anything that stirs emotions is my muse. I aspire to broadcast positivity and mitigate negative energies,” he asserted.
In grappling with the aftermath of Kirk’s death and the ensuing reactions, Ryan’s story exemplifies the intersection of art, faith, and personal conviction in times of adversity.
