Authorities have successfully recovered one of three monkeys that escaped following a truck accident on a Mississippi interstate. The incident occurred while the truck was transporting 21 monkeys from Tulane University in New Orleans, which flipped over, leading to the animals’ escape.
According to an announcement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the monkey was located several days after the crash. A local homeowner discovered the animal on their property along Highway 503 near Heidelberg. The sheriff’s office shared this information through a Facebook post, stating, “A homeowner on Highway 503 near Heidelberg found one of the monkeys on their property this morning. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks responded, and the monkey is now in their possession. We have no other details at the moment.”
The monkeys were part of a program funded by the National Institutes of Health, as highlighted by the White Coat Waste Project. This nonprofit organization actively campaigns against the use of government funds for animal testing, leading to significant public discourse surrounding the ethical implications of such programs.
Following the crash, the sheriff’s office confirmed that five out of the group of monkeys were “eliminated” shortly after the incident. The driver of the truck had previously indicated the potential danger posed by the animals, recommending that handlers wear protective gear.
Tulane University provided additional details to Fox News Digital, clarifying that the monkeys involved had been examined just before their departure from the institution. The university assured the public that these animals were free of disease prior to being transported.
During the accident, 13 monkeys remained safely caged within the vehicle. Following the completion of the rescue operation, these remaining monkeys were returned to their owner, who is now in the process of transporting them to their designated location.
Due to confidentiality agreements, officials did not disclose the identity of the monkeys’ owner or their original destination. Tulane University emphasized that moving research animals is a standard procedure, conducted under strict guidelines to ensure the safety of the animals and the confidentiality of involved parties.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol, along with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Local law enforcement is also involved in the inquiry as they seek to understand how the accident occurred and ensure all protocols were followed during the transport of these animals.
This incident shines a light on the ongoing debates regarding animal research and transport, highlighting the necessity for stricter guidelines and safety measures in place for the welfare of both the animals and the public. As investigations continue, many are calling for answers and accountability from the involved parties.
In the wake of this incident, communities are encouraged to watch out for any unusual animals on the loose, as more information comes to light regarding animal escapes from research transport. The authorities are likely to issue further updates as the investigation progresses.
