The Mississippi State Bulldogs achieved a stunning victory over the No. 12 Arizona State Sun Devils, clinching the win in the final seconds of the game on Saturday night.
With approximately 40 seconds remaining, Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen orchestrated a drive down the field. He connected with Brenen Thompson, who outpaced a Sun Devils defender. After catching the pass, Thompson dashed toward the end zone, demonstrating his speed and agility.
Thompson reached the goal line, putting Mississippi State ahead 24-20, a score that ultimately sealed the Bulldogs’ victory.
Fans in Starkville erupted in celebration, storming the field to commemorate the thrilling win.
Head coach Jeff Lebby praised the atmosphere at Davis Wade Stadium, commenting on the significance of the victory for the team and university. He shared, “What an atmosphere, what an evening. That is Davis Wade Stadium at its finest. The most rewarding part was seeing our university support us in such a special way, given everything we’ve endured in the program.”
This marked a historic win for Mississippi State, as it was their first success against a top 15 nonconference opponent since 1991.
Reflecting on the challenging moments during the game, Shapen noted the team’s focus on executing each play. “These are the moments I live for. We persevered, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be in this position. The emotions are running high right now,” he said.
Shapen completed 19 of 33 passes for 279 yards and threw three touchdowns. Thompson was a standout receiver, with six catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, Anthony Evans III contributed with nine receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham criticized his team’s inability to mitigate the Bulldogs’ big plays. “The big plays dictated the game’s outcome. Mississippi State is a formidable team, and their explosiveness was evident. We managed their big plays for most of the game, but ultimately couldn’t contain them when it mattered most,” he stated.
Arizona State running backs Raleek Brown and Kanye Udoh performed admirably on the ground. Brown rushed for 110 yards on 18 carries, while Udoh recorded 105 yards on 23 carries, adding a score to his performance.
In what was a gripping encounter, both teams displayed moments of brilliance on the field. The intensity of the match kept fans on the edge of their seats, culminating in a thrilling finish that will be remembered for years to come.
As the season progresses, both teams will be eager to build on their performances. The Bulldogs will look to maintain momentum from this victory, aiming to establish themselves as a force within their league. Meanwhile, Arizona State will need to regroup and address the weaknesses exposed during this matchup.
This game serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of football. As teams head into future matches, fans can only hope for more exhilarating moments like this one. Mississippi State’s remarkable triumph not only inspires their players but also energizes their loyal fan base.
