Missouri quarterback Sam Horn faced a heartbreaking setback when he suffered an injury on his very first snap during Thursday night’s game against Central Arkansas. The unfortunate incident occurred while the Tigers were securing a dominant 61-6 victory, leaving Horn sidelined for the entire match.
This injury comes amid a fierce competition for the starting quarterback position with Penn State transfer Beau Pribula. Many fans had anticipated this showdown, which adds to the stakes of the season.
Horn, a redshirt junior, stepped onto the field during the second series of the game, when the score was already 6-0 in favor of the Tigers. He initiated his play by rushing for six yards, but it was during this moment that he took a significant hit to his lower body.
After the injury, Horn remained on the ground while his teammates rallied to assist him. Medical personnel eventually helped him off the field, marking a distressing moment for the team.
Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz expressed his concern during a post-game interview, stating, “I’m very disappointed and sad with the injury to Sam and the injury to Blake Craig. Those two things are really disappointing, and we’ll see tomorrow what the extent of those injuries are.”
The head coach conveyed that while the team secured a decisive win, the joy was somewhat overshadowed by these injuries. He added, “So, it kind of takes the damper a little bit off the win.”
When asked if Horn’s injury could potentially be season-ending, Drinkwitz refrained from speculation. He indicated that further information would emerge following an MRI scheduled for Friday. After the game, Horn was seen on the sidelines wearing a full leg brace and utilizing crutches.
With Horn’s injury, the path has become clearer for Pribula, as he now has the opportunity to claim the starting quarterback position. Before the incident, the two quarterbacks were engaged in a head-to-head battle for the No. 1 spot as kickoff approached.
Pribula took full advantage of the situation, completing 23 of 28 passes for an impressive 283 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed to the game with 65 rushing yards and two scores on the ground, showcasing his versatility and capability under pressure.
Coach Drinkwitz praised Pribula’s performance, commenting, “I don’t think he stepped up. I think he was just continuing to play the way he was playing.” His ability to handle the situation with poise and skill was evident. Drinkwitz further stated, “I thought he did a nice job handling the situation. He knew he was going to play the first half. We knew we were going to run that formation pretty early in the game. Just disappointing that [Horn] got injured. It was a heck of a run.”
The Missouri Tigers look to navigate the implications of Horn’s injury while finding confidence in Pribula’s emerging leadership. The upcoming MRI results will be crucial for determining the team’s strategy moving forward. As the season progresses, the Tigers hope to rally together amid these early challenges.
The injury marks a significant turn in the Tigers’ campaign, adding an unexpected layer of complexity to their quarterback situation. Fans and team officials alike are waiting eagerly for updates. In the face of adversity, the team aims to build resilience and unity to carry them through the remainder of the season.
