Moderate Democrat Sounds Alarm on Extremism from Both Sides

EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Tom Suozzi, a moderate Democrat representing a district that President Donald Trump won in the 2024 elections, has issued a cautionary message to fellow elected officials across party lines. He believes both Democrats and Republicans are risking their political futures by catering to the extreme factions of their bases.

Suozzi emphasizes that pandering to extremist positions can lead to political downfall. He expressed concern that many elected officials prioritize the demands of a small, radical segment over the broader interests of their constituents. "It’s a road to ruin, because too many extremists, too many elected officials, are busy pandering to their base instead of listening to the general public and instead of trying to find common ground," Suozzi told Fox News Digital.

Explaining his views, Suozzi pointed out that while the far-right and far-left represent a relatively minor segment of the electorate, they wield significant influence in shaping political discourse in Congress. "We have not seen much compromise these days. Everything has been one party or the other trying to do a my-way-or-the-highway partisan effort," he commented.

Need for Compromise in Congress

In recent years, political polarization has intensified, allowing extremists to dominate the narrative. Suozzi argues that productive dialogue has diminished, leaving behind a landscape where extreme views overshadow moderate perspectives. He believes both parties, motivated by good intentions, are missing the mark in their approach to governance.

"I’m sure both sides are inspired by good intention, but it’s not long-lasting, and it’s not going to help move our country forward," he said. This absence of compromise leads to a stalled legislative process that fails to meet the evolving needs of American citizens.

Local Politics and National Trends

Suozzi represents a diverse district that includes portions of the New York City suburbs of Long Island as well as parts of the city itself. However, his district’s political climate is not as progressive as other New York areas that have supported candidates with more leftist ideologies, such as the socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Suozzi has previously voiced his opposition to Mamdani’s leadership style and political agenda.

When questioned about Mamdani’s influence on his upcoming campaign for the 2026 midterms, Suozzi refrained from making definitive statements, instead highlighting significant Republican gains in his district during the 2025 election cycle. "In Queens, in my portion of the district, Mamdani lost to Cuomo by 27%. A Republican city councilwoman won in my district, and she did so decisively. My Long Island portion, which borders the city, witnessed Republicans effectively leveraging Mamdani against Democrats in their races, leading to electoral victories," Suozzi explained.

Listening to Voters for Success

Suozzi characterizes his district as consistently competitive, mentioning that Trump won the area by a margin of 19,000 votes while he secured re-election by just 11,000. He recognizes the importance of appealing to Trump voters to maintain his seat. "I had to get 20,000 people who voted for Donald Trump to also vote for me. That’s still the case for me. Despite many Democratic victories nationwide, my district performed relatively Republican," he stated.

Suozzi credits his appeal to a broad swath of voters to his commitment to listening and responding to their concerns. By addressing issues pertinent to both sides of the aisle, he has established himself as a candidate capable of bridging divides.

"The reason I was successful in 2024 is because I was endorsed by the police, I clarified my position on immigration advocating for border security, and I fought for affordability. I felt compelled to align with what the people were asking me to do," he remarked.

Shared Concerns Across the Aisle

Interestingly, Suozzi acknowledges common ground with both Trump and Mamdani regarding economic insecurity. He notes, "Mamdani was right, much like Trump is right, that people are economically insecure. They’re worried about their financial security. They properly diagnose the problem." However, he firmly believes that socialism is not the solution to these concerns.

"The challenge lies in identifying effective solutions. Socialism is a terrible solution. It has never worked in the history of the world, and it will not work now," he proclaimed.

Instead of adopting extreme economic policies, Suozzi encourages Democrats across the nation to focus on making affordability a priority. He emphasizes the necessity of formulating solutions tailored to local and federal levels. One glaring issue he points out is the minimum wage, which has stagnated at $7.25 an hour federally since July 2009. "That’s absurd. Twenty states still have a minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. We should be fighting to increase the minimum wage," he stated.

Charting a Pragmatic Path Forward

In shaping the future of the Democratic Party, Suozzi advocates for a pragmatic stance that moves away from socialism on a national scale. He asserts, "We must embrace capitalism, not socialism. We must prioritize mainstream values rather than extreme ones. We must champion safety over lawlessness and advocate for reform rather than maintain the status quo."

As he concluded, Suozzi reminds his audience, "We have to be proud of our country, not ashamed of it." His commitment to centrist policies reflects a broader need for politicians to consider the voices of everyday Americans in order to create a more unified and effective political landscape.
