Marc Fogel, an American detained in Russia since 2021, has been released, much to the relief and gratitude of his mother, Malphine Fogel. She publicly thanked President Donald Trump for staying true to his promise of securing her son’s freedom.
Malphine Fogel shared her deep appreciation during an interview with “America Reports.” She stated that President Trump had assured her of his commitment, saying, “He promised me he would get him out, and he kept his promise. I can’t thank him enough.”
Fogel, a history teacher at the Anglo-American School in Moscow, is finally on his way back to the United States after his release, which followed diplomatic efforts by officials from the Trump administration. In August 2021, Fogel was arrested at a Russian airport for drug possession, which his family argues involved medically prescribed marijuana. He was then sentenced to a staggering 14 years in prison.
Prior to her son’s release, Malphine Fogel had the opportunity to meet with Trump during a rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania. During this meeting, she implored him not to forget about her son. She recalled, “He assured me three different times, ‘If I get in, I’ll get him out.’ I really think he has been instrumental in making this happen.”
With her son’s release confirmed, Malphine is now celebrating this long-awaited promise. She expressed her gratitude not only toward Trump but also to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others involved in the complex diplomatic negotiations.
Upon receiving the phone call from her son confirming his presence at the Moscow airport, Malphine described the emotional moment as overwhelming. She said, “It was a total surprise when he called, and he said he was in the Moscow airport. That meant they had taken him out of the prison to Moscow.”
In the week leading up to the call, she felt an inexplicable sense of optimism despite having not heard from her son, adding to the shock of the news.
“The last week or so, for some crazy reason, I had a better feeling about things, but I hadn’t heard from him in a week, so I thought that was odd. When he called this morning, it was just a total shock,” she expressed, still grappling with the joy of the news.
As Marc prepares to reunite with his family, his mother anticipates the emotional welcome her son will receive upon arriving in the U.S. “He’s going to be sore from all the hugs he’s going to get. We are just waiting and waiting for him to get into the U.S. I think the first thing he’ll do is stoop down and kiss the ground,” she said, with evident excitement.
The release of Marc Fogel from Russian custody comes amid challenging diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia. Reports indicate that U.S.-Russia relations are currently at a low point, with tensions prevalent across various fronts. While the release of Fogel is a significant humanitarian success, it exists within a complicated framework of geopolitical considerations.
For now, Malphine Fogel channels her energy into celebrating her son’s return, demonstrating resilience and hope in the face of adversity. As she navigates this emotional moment, she emphasizes the importance of support from friends, family, and officials who played a role in Marc’s release.
“It’s just an unbelievable situation right now,” Malphine reflected. As she waits for her son’s arrival, the feeling of relief and thankfulness permeates her thoughts.
In conclusion, the moment highlights not only the dedication of families advocating for their loved ones but also the complexities involved in international diplomacy. The successful release of Marc Fogel underscores the importance of commitment and perseverance in such challenging scenarios.
