Mother’s Unusual Reaction to Wine Unveils Life-Altering Cancer Diagnosis

One woman’s uncomfortable reaction to wine has led to a significant health discovery. Hollie Thursby, a 28-year-old mother of two from the U.K., recently shared her story with Kennedy News and Media, revealing how her experience following the birth of her second son led her to seek medical attention.

Unexpected Symptoms After Childbirth

After giving birth to her son Jack, Thursby began noticing unusual symptoms. During a routine checkup for Jack, who was just a few months old, she mentioned experiencing unbearably itchy skin. Initially, her doctor attributed this to hormonal changes often experienced by new mothers.

Drinking in Moderation

Occasionally, Thursby enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine. However, she soon found herself grappling with significant pain that radiated down the side of her neck. “It was really quite painful and uncomfortable,” she recalled, expressing her disappointment at this unexpected reaction.

Fatigue and Discomfort

Alongside the pain, the mother reported feeling extremely exhausted, which she initially attributed to the demands of motherhood. As sleepless nights with young children took their toll, she described feeling as if someone were sitting on her chest when she finally went to bed.

The Discovery of a Lump

In July 2025, after noticing persistent and concerning symptoms, Thursby discovered a sizeable lump on the side of her neck. While the lump was not painful, its presence alarmed her. “It was hard, it didn’t move, but it was there,” she said. Observing the lump’s visibility when turning her neck heightened her concerns.

Cancer Diagnosis

Subsequent medical evaluations revealed that Thursby was dealing with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer characterized by the involvement of two or more lymph nodes, according to Cancer Research U.K. The diagnosis marked a pivotal moment in her life, as she began to connect her symptoms with her health condition.

Symptoms Associated with Hodgkin Lymphoma

Common symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma often include swollen lymph nodes, heavy sweating, unexplained weight loss, itching, a persistent cough, shortness of breath, fever, and abdominal pain, especially after consuming alcohol. Thursby explained, “Pain when you drink alcohol is actually a known side effect of Hodgkin lymphoma. It’s linked to the acidity in wine, unlike other alcoholic beverages.”

Understanding Alcohol-Related Pain

Although the relationship between alcohol consumption and pain in Hodgkin lymphoma patients has been recognized in medical literature since the 1950s, such instances remain relatively rare, according to Healthline. This awareness highlights the importance of recognizing bodily signals and symptoms that may indicate serious health issues.

Facing Cancer Treatment

Thursby started chemotherapy in November, facing the challenging reality of managing her health while trying to care for her children. Losing her mother to a blood disorder known as myelodysplasia fueled her determination to overcome this new battle. “I grew up without a mum, and it was horrendous. I can’t do that to the boys,” she expressed, emphasizing her commitment to fight for her family’s well-being.

A Hopeful Outlook

Despite the difficult journey ahead, Thursby remains hopeful. “We’re all devastated, but we all know now, and we’ve got a treatment plan, which is what we need,” she said. Her focus on recovery remains steadfast, driven by a desire to be present for her children. “I’m just doing everything I can to get better for them. I keep telling myself this is only temporary. I just need to keep going.”

Trust Your Symptoms

This mother’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of paying attention to one’s body. Anyone who experiences pain or unusual symptoms after consuming alcohol should not hesitate to consult a doctor for a thorough evaluation. Early detection can significantly impact treatment outcomes for various health concerns.
