MSNBC Initiates Major Shift Towards Independence from NBC News Amid Corporate Changes

MSNBC has marked a significant milestone in its evolution by ceasing its reliance on NBC News correspondents and crews for coverage. This development signifies a crucial step as the long-anticipated separation between the two networks unfolds.

Historically, NBC and MSNBC maintained a close-knit relationship, with the cable network depending heavily on the news-gathering capabilities and talent of its broadcast counterpart. However, in a strategic move last year, Comcast announced plans to spin off its cable networks, including MSNBC, into a separate entity now named Versant. This new company will house not only MSNBC but also CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and the Golf Channel, while NBCUniversal will retain NBC News, the NBC News Now streaming service, Telemundo, and Bravo.

As of Monday, all NBC News staff who have accepted new roles at MSNBC will transition fully into their new positions, eliminating their ties to NBC News platforms. This separation allows MSNBC to operate under its own standards and no longer conform to the regulations set by its former corporate parent.

Shifting Operational Dependencies

From an operational standpoint, MSNBC has also decided to sever ties with NBC News, aside from coverage based in Washington, D.C. This aspect of the relationship is set to remain in place until October 20, according to a network insider. After that date, MSNBC will no longer engage in editorial calls and meetings led by NBC News, heralding a new era of independence for the cable network.

Plans for a New Identity

In a further effort to redefine its brand, MSNBC is preparing to change its name to “My Source News Opinion World,” or MS NOW. While no specific date for this rebranding has been disclosed, it indicates a strong intent to distance from the NBC brand.

A Hiring Surge Amid Transition

Anticipating this major transition, MSNBC has embarked on an aggressive hiring spree, posting numerous open positions over the past week. This recruitment drive appears essential as the network aims to carve out its new identity away from the traditional legacy media of NBC.

Viewership Challenges

The timing of this operational shift comes on the heels of a challenging third quarter for MSNBC. The network faced a dramatic decline, shedding 45% of its total day audience and losing 59% of viewers in the key advertising demographic from the same period last year. This represents MSNBC’s weakest performance in the critical demographic since 1997, raising concerns about the network’s future viability.

Maintaining Familiar Faces

Despite these setbacks, MSNBC has assured that all current lineup members will remain with the network throughout its transformation into MS NOW. This includes prominent figures such as Rachel Maddow, Jen Psaki, Chris Hayes, Nicolle Wallace, Ari Melber, Lawrence O’Donnell, Stephanie Ruhle, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski. Their continued presence suggests that MSNBC aims to retain viewer loyalty during this period of change.

Shifts in Talent Pool

While MSNBC retains a strong lineup, NBC has retained key talent, including Steve Kornacki, who has become a significant presence on MSNBC’s election night coverage. Andrea Mitchell, who concluded her long-standing program “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” will stay with NBC as its chief Washington and foreign affairs correspondent. Additionally, José Díaz-Balart, who left MSNBC earlier this year, will continue with NBC, anchoring “NBC Nightly News Saturday” and Noticias Telemundo.

New Faces Joining MS NOW

Several reporters from NBC are set to join the new MS NOW organization. Among those making the transition are justice beat reporters Ken Dilanian and Ryan Reilly, national correspondent Jacob Soboroff, White House correspondent Vaughn Hillyard, and internet reporter Brandy Zadrozny. The influx of talent reflects the network’s strategic vision for building a robust reporting team.

Meghan Rafferty, previously the executive producer for “NBC Nightly News,” will also make the leap to MSNBC, where she will take on the role of vice president of News Standards. This signifies a commitment to maintaining journalistic integrity while establishing a fresh path forward.
