MSNBC Restructures Programming, Elevates Jen Psaki’s Role as Rachel Maddow Reverts to Weekly Format

Former press secretary Jen Psaki will host a new primetime program on MSNBC, filling the 9 p.m. ET slot from Tuesday to Thursday. This change comes as Rachel Maddow’s show transitions back to airing only on Mondays. The programming shift follows significant viewer challenges for MSNBC after President Donald Trump’s initial 100 days in office.

Rachel Maddow, who is recognized as the network’s highest-paid talent, previously reduced the frequency of “The Rachel Maddow Show” to a weekly slot in 2022 to explore various projects. As the network faced declining viewership post-election, Maddow’s return to hosting five nights a week was introduced, however, she is now reverting to her one-night-a-week schedule.

Prior to Maddow’s temporary return, Alex Wagner hosted the coveted 9 p.m. slot on Tuesdays through Thursdays. However, with Psaki’s new assignment, Wagner will not reclaim her previous role despite being retained as a senior political analyst at the network.

Rebecca Kutler, MSNBC’s newly appointed president, has implemented extensive programming changes since her recent promotion. These modifications include the cancellation of Joy Reid’s program, “The ReidOut,” which will no longer air as Reid departs from the network.

Several other shows have met a similar fate, including “Ayman Mohyeldin Reports” and “The Katie Phang Show,” alongside weekend slots hosted by Jonathan Capehart. Nevertheless, Mohyeldin, Capehart, and Phang will remain affiliated with the network, transitioning into new roles and projects.

The series titled “Inside with Jen Psaki” debuted earlier this year under Kutler’s guidance and has become MSNBC’s most-viewed weekend show. The success of Psaki’s program contributed to speculation about her enhanced presence during primetime. Starting shortly, she will lead her show on weeknights, signalling MSNBC’s commitment to its recognized progressive stance.

In response to the programming overhaul, Symone Sanders-Townsend, a former spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, will lead a new show at 7 p.m. ET on the days previously occupied by Reid. This new offering will consist of one hour of content from Tuesday to Thursday and extend to two hours on Monday evenings. Psaki’s show will be adjusted accordingly due to this scheduling update.

Moreover, MSNBC plans to bolster its operation by establishing a Washington bureau and enhancing its domestic and international reporting teams. This initiative coincides with the parent company Comcast’s move to reorganize several NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC, into a new entity termed SpinCo. This separation is designed to delineate NBC News from the cable network ecosystem.

Daytime programming adjustments include time slot changes for anchors like Ana Cabrera, Chris Jansing, and Katy Tur. Additionally, the weekend program hosted by Ali Velshi will expand to a three-hour slot.

As part of the ongoing shakeup, the production facilities for MSNBC will be consolidated in New York and Washington, D.C., contributing to the cancellation of shows filmed in Miami, such as “The Katie Phang Show” and “José Díaz-Balart Reports.” Díaz-Balart will continue anchoring “Weekend Nightly News” for NBC.

The full slate of changes will commence in late April, although specific dates remain subject to confirmation.

In a recent meeting with MSNBC leadership, Kutler remarked on the forthcoming developments with a mix of enthusiasm and caution. She acknowledged the inherent challenges of the current media landscape while emphasizing the exciting opportunity for the network to redefine its identity.

Kutler explained, “This is going to be a really exciting time but also a challenging time. It is vital that we, as leaders, are transparent about the obstacles we face. Our work is arduous even on normal days, and these are not normal times.”

As the network embarks on this new chapter, speculation surrounding the potential name change of the revamped cable company has arisen. However, SpinCo CEO Mark Lazarus addressed concerns among staff, advising that the MSNBC moniker would remain intact.

The extensive restructuring of MSNBC’s programming highlights not only the network’s strategy for renewal but also its commitment to maintaining a progressive voice in the evolving media landscape.
